Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day draws near! With the most romantic day of the year approaching, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our list of the most romantic states in the U.S., putting sports betting aside for a moment.

We looked at the most romantic states a few years ago and thought it was the perfect time to check up on the latest love levels with the most romantic day of the year arriving soon.

With the big day of love just around the corner, we took a closer look at what the most romantic states were, and which states have some work to do in the love department. To uncover the answer, we turned to Google Trends to analyze search behaviors across the country.

The Methodology

We analyzed Google Trends data from the past five years (2020-2024) for the search term "Valentine's Day" in each state to find the most romantic state. We specifically focused on searches made in the 30 days leading up to Valentine’s Day each year. Each state received a score from 1 to 100 based on search volume, with higher search interest earning a higher score. We then averaged these scores over the last five years to rank the states from most to least romantic. In the case of a tie, the state with the highest score in 2024 secured the higher ranking.

West Virginia Continues Love Lead

When we analyzed this list two years ago, West Virginia was the most romantic state. Two years later, West Virginia is still the most romantic state. Even though it took a slight dip in 2024, there is still plenty of love in West Virginia and it ranked highest over the past five years on average.

Ohio Makes Lovely Leap In 2024

Ohio has been one of the top romantic states for several years, but it took a giant step forward in 2024, landing a perfect 100 romantic score. Overall, it’s still just fifth, but if the perfect scores continue, Ohio could be at the top of this list by the end of the decade.

Eastern US Continues To Love The Top 10

The top 10 most romantic states feature many states in Eastern Standard Time (EST), including West Virginia (No. 1), Delaware (No. 2), New Jersey (No. 3), Pennsylvania (No. 4), Ohio (No. 5), Rhode Island (No. 8), and Connecticut (No. 10). Is love more in the eastern air? It’s difficult to say, but based on our findings, there are more searches for Valentine’s Day in the East.

Low-Love States

On the opposite end of the love spectrum, there is Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Minnesota, and Colorado  in the bottom five. These are mostly colder states, so perhaps the climate has something to do with who is searching for Valentine’s Day, but we don’t know for sure.

Final Thoughts

Taking a look at the most romantic states was a fun exercise to do. However, it’s difficult to conclude the date as to why certain states are more invested in Valentine’s Day than others. It appears that climate could be a factor, but hard to know why there is more love in the air ahead of Valentine’s Day in some states compared to others.
