Which CBB Coach Gets Fired First?
When you haven’t made the NCAA Tournament in 16 years, it’s probably time for a change. That’s exactly what appears to be happening in Chestnut Hill, as fifth-year Boston College coach Earl Grant is our top pick to be axed next, at +350.
The former College of Charleston head coach has had little success since arriving at BC in 2021, going 66-77 (.462) with one winning season during that time, that being the Eagles’ 20-16 finish in 2023-24.
Grant’s contract is not public (as BC is a private school), though the longtime college coach did sign a two-year extension running through 2028-29 back in 2023, potentially complicating the Eagles’ exit plan.
For now, we’re going with him as our top pick to get the boot next, though a prodigal son in the Bluegrass State could get canned before him, as Mark Pope of Kentucky skids to a 6-4 sophomore slump with his alma mater.
Pope, who is currently our No. 2 candidate to get fired next (at +450) has seen his prospects dim in a big way over the course of the season, with UK going from the preseason top 25 to an 0-4 record against ranked teams out of the gate.
While two UK’s four losses came by a combined total of 11 points, the Wildcats did find themselves on the wrong end of a 94-59 shellacking at the hands of 11th ranked Gonzaga last Friday, with a 103-67 win over lowly North Carolina Central being the team’s only win this month.
All told, Pope and his five-year, $27.5 million contract at UK are probably enough to keep him around through 2026, at least, we’re not ruling out a change of heart in the Bluegrass State, which is why we’re giving the former BYU head coach a strong shot at getting the boot before long.

Who Else Could Get Fired?
While Grant and Pope are our leading candidates to get axed next, other college basketball leaders like Steve Pikiell of Rutgers (+550), Adrian Autry of Syracuse (+750), Cincinnati’s Wes Miller (+1000), South Carolina’s Lamont Paris (+1400), Arizona State’s Bob Hurley (+2100) and Mike Young of Virginia Tech (+4650) could also get shown the door before long.
Pikiell’s time in Piscataway has gone from high hopes to a lot of ‘nopes,’ as the Scarlet Knights went from reaching the Big Dance in 2021 and 2022 to posting a .500 record (54-54) since.
Autry’s run replacing Syracuse legend Jim Boeheim has been anything but picture perfect, going 39-34 (.534) across two-plus seasons with the Orange and missing the Big Dance in each of the first two full seasons in charge of the former Big East and ACC power.
Paris’ time in Columbia has followed a similar trajectory as the others on our list, going from leading Chattanooga to a Southern Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth to SEC mediocrity, with a 55-52 (.514) record at South Carolina since arriving in 2022.
Hurley’s time in Tempe has seen the hot-tempered former Duke star go from taking ASU to consecutive NCAA Tournaments in 2018 and 2019 to four losing seasons in the time since, with the program’s last Big Dance berth coming in 2023, after going 23-13.
In total, Hurley’s gone 176-153 (.535) since arriving at ASU in 2015, though the leash on the CBB lifer may be nearing its end, given the lack of success in Tempe in recent years.
Finally, Young’s tenure in Blacksburg has been equally forgettable, with two straight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2022, followed by consecutive 19-15 campaigns followed by last year’s 13-19 clunker.
While the Hokies are 8-2 this year, another disappointing run through ACC play could spell the end of Young’s seven-year stint at Virginia Tech, leading to his inclusion on our next fired coaches list as the calendar flips over to 2026.
