Sporting News leads its NC State board with Huff, and Athlon expects his name to surface for most Power Four openings this cycle. He has Memphis 6-2 in his first year after going 32-20 at Marshall, and his teams have reached five straight bowl games. He worked under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2019-20.

Sportsnaut puts Dickert alone atop its NC State list, with the only real question being whether a richer job comes calling first. He won nine games in his Wake Forest debut, has the Deacons 6-1 now, and his team already beat the Wolfpack this season. An in-state, in-conference hire is the lowest-risk path.

USA Today calls it a long shot with no college coaching experience, though the hire would draw huge attention. Rivers interviewed for the Bills’ head coaching job this past offseason before withdrawing.

Key Context

Status: Athletic director Boo Corrigan announced the move on Oct. 24. Interim coach Todd Goebbel, the running backs coach and special teams coordinator, finishes the regular season.
Season: The Wolfpack are 3-4 (1-3 ACC) with losses to Virginia, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Stanford.
Games Left: California (Oct. 31), Duke (Nov. 7), Syracuse (Nov. 14), at Florida State (Nov. 21) and at North Carolina (Nov. 28).
Rivers Factor: Gunner Rivers, a four-star QB in the 2027 class, is committed to NC State. A Philip Rivers hire would help keep that commitment intact.
Editorial odds · Updated Oct. 26, 2026 · Candidate names and records via Athlon Sports, Sporting News, CBS Sports, Yahoo Sports, Sportsnaut and Saturday Down South. Doeren buyout per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Implied probability is the raw conversion of each price and includes margin.

NC State Coaching Search: Why the Wolfpack Moved On From Doeren

Dave Doeren was fired with NC State at 3-4, and the losses piled up in the games that mattered most. The Wolfpack fell at Virginia in the opener, at Vanderbilt on a last-second fumble return for a touchdown, at home to Wake Forest and finally at Stanford, 31-28. Doeren won 98 games in 14 seasons, but he never reached 10 wins in a season or won an ACC title.

The move is expensive. Doeren was under contract through Dec. 31, 2029, and NC State owes him roughly $10 million, with Yahoo Sports putting the figure at $10.3 million. The school also parted ways with general manager Andy Vaughn, according to WRAL, which reported that an NC State spokesperson confirmed the move.

The Favorites: Charles Huff and Jake Dickert

Huff, 43, is the first name on Sporting News' board and one Athlon expects to surface for most Power Four openings. He has Memphis 6-2 in his first year after going 32-20 at Marshall from 2021-24 and 7-5 at Southern Miss last season. That run included five straight bowl trips, and he spent 2019-20 on Nick Saban's staff at Alabama. At +450, our price implies an 18.2% chance.

Dickert, also 43, leads Sportsnaut's list. He is 6-1 in his second season at Wake Forest after a nine-win debut that ended with a Duke's Mayo Bowl victory, and his Demon Deacons beat NC State on Oct. 10. At +600, he carries an implied probability of 14.3%.

The pricing logic is simple. Both men have current head coaching résumés, ACC or regional familiarity, and no obvious obstacle other than a competing offer. For Dickert, Sportsnaut's point is the one that matters: a better-resourced job is the only real threat to a deal with NC State.

NC State Head Coach Candidates: Loggains, Chadwell and Monken

Dowell Loggains is 5-2 at Appalachian State and brings an NFL background as a coordinator for the Bears, Dolphins and Jets. Sporting News says he would not be a surprising hire. Jamey Chadwell has Liberty at 6-1 after a 4-8 season, and his 31-14 mark there follows stops at Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. Jeff Monken is 94-65 at Army, where he was hired under NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan, who was Army's athletic director at the time, which gives him a built-in connection.

Philip Rivers NC State Odds: Big Hype, Bigger Risk

Philip Rivers is the name driving search and social interest. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that "a name expected to be considered at NC State is former star quarterback Philip Rivers." Rivers played at NC State from 2000-03, the school retired his No. 17, and he is 49-19 as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama. He interviewed for the Buffalo Bills' head coaching job in January before withdrawing.

There is also a recruiting hook. His son Gunner, a four-star 2027 quarterback, is committed to the Wolfpack. The obstacle is obvious: Rivers has never coached in college, and reports describe him as a long shot for that reason. At +1000, our price reflects both the hype and the risk.

Longshots and The Field

The deeper names include Dan Mullen (UNLV), Scott Satterfield (Cincinnati, a Hillsborough, N.C., native), Lance Taylor (Western Michigan, last year's MAC champion), Billy Napier (former Florida head coach), Brian Kelly (former LSU head coach) and Manny Diaz (Duke). The widget has the detail on each one.

Diaz is the fun rivalry angle. He coached at NC State from 2000-05, and his Blue Devils visit Raleigh on Nov. 7. Kelly appears only because On3's Pete Nakos listed him on an initial hot board.

The Field, at +400, is the catch-all for names like Jason Eck, Buster Faulkner, Bryant Haines, Glenn Schumann and Shannon Dawson.

What to Watch Next in the NC State Coaching Search

NC State has five regular-season games left: California on Oct. 31, Duke on Nov. 7, Syracuse on Nov. 14, at Florida State on Nov. 21 and at North Carolina on Nov. 28. Coaching searches often move fast once the regular season ends, and Gunner Rivers' commitment gives the Rivers story a recruiting clock.

We will update these odds as reports develop. For more, see the latest college football odds at Bookies.com.

Methodology

Odds are editorial projections by the Bookies.com team, built from candidate reporting by Athlon Sports, Sporting News, CBS Sports, Yahoo Sports, Sportsnaut, Saturday Down South and Bettors Insider, with records from official school and Wikipedia season pages as of Oct. 26, 2026. Prices reflect each candidate's head coaching résumé, ties to NC State and the Carolinas, how prominently they appear in coverage, and how gettable they are. Implied probability is the direct conversion of each American price and includes margin, so the board totals more than 100 percent. These are not live sportsbook lines, and NC State has not confirmed any candidate as a target.
