Of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, Arsenal are thought to be the most active on transfer deadline day as they look to sign reinforcements in both attack and defence.

Defensive midfielder Thomas Partey (+150) remains a target but the odds are slightly against the Gunners signing him at this late stage, while Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar (+225) also seems to be slipping through the net.

That means Chelsea’s Jorginho (+100) has emerged as a more likely option to solve Mikel Arteta’s gap in central midfield, and although the prospect of signing the Italian may be a little underwhelming, their apparent pursuit of superstar Philippe Coutinho just got a whole lot more interesting.

That’s because UK bookmakers BetVictor have slashed the odds on the former Liverpool star becoming an Arsenal player before the transfer window shuts, shifting his price from +150 to -300 today.

The reason for the odds swing is somewhat unclear and comes as a surprise given the Brazilian playmaker has worked his way back into the Barcelona side under Ronald Koeman, showing signs of his old form since the Dutchman gave Coutinho another chance at the Camp Nou.

Is Koeman in Control?

However, Koeman may not have full control over the players he can keep and bring in before Monday night’s deadline, meaning Coutinho – who Barcelona have been trying to offload for multiple windows – could yet be sacrificed to cover the costs of new signings.

Strangely, other bookmakers have not yet reacted to BetVictor’s price swing, with 888Sport and Unibet still going +900 on Coutinho joining Arsenal today in what would likely be a loan move to get the 28-year-old off Barcelona’s wage bill.

Tottenham are BetVictor’s second favourites to sign him, but Jose Mourinho’s side are pretty much out of the reckoning at +400.

Having signed Gareth Bale on loan already, Spurs are thought to be prioritising a striker, and Mourinho could turn to a player he managed during his second spell at Chelsea – Diego Costa.

The Brazilian-born former Spain international is surplus to requirements at Atletico Madrid since the arrival of Luis Suarez and Betfair have put a price of +130 on him moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today.

There’s no doubt Spurs need back up for Harry Kane, and a loan move for Costa could be convenient for the time-being at least. Costa arguably played his career-best football under Mourinho at Chelsea, but Mourinho faces competition from PSG, who lead the betting on his future at +125.
