What to Know About ESPN BET Sportsbook

As part of a $1.5 billion agreement, PENN Entertainment has rebranded its sportsbook as ESPN BET sportsbook. PENN Entertainment will pay ESPN $1.5 billion in cash over a 10-year period, marking the media giant’s first toe-dip into the online sports betting space.

Sports bettors now see ESPN Bet sportsbook replace Barstool Sportsbook as the front-facing brand, with original Barstool owner Dave Portnoy gaining back control of Barstool Sports in conjunction with this deal between ESPN and Penn Entertainment. 

PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden expected the ESPN Bet platform to launch in more than a dozen states, "before Thanksgiving" and that plan has come to fruition. 

ESPN Bet looks to gain an audience and following with its different mediums, including its website, TV stations, apps, and ESPN personalities lending a hand to establish the ESPN brand for legal online sports betting just as we get to the business end of the NFL season and the College Football season.

It was a matter of when, not if, the ESPN brand would wade into the online sports betting space. It’s found its partner in Penn Entertainment, which previously had a deal with Barstool Sports to host the Barstool sportsbook. 

Sports bettors have seen that deal in place since 2020 and now shifts when they launch ESPN Bet. ESPN Bet hosts the online sportsbook in more than a dozen states. 

DraftKings was once thought to be the answer for ESPN’s pursuit of to launch ESPN bet, but that never came to fruition, and the media mogul had an odds deal with Caesars Sportsbook to showcase their specific odds on television programs, websites, and mobile apps.

So it’s no surprise that this deal between Penn Entertainment and ESPN has happened. ESPN has a number of different TV segments focused specifically on sports betting-related content, and their game broadcasts will routinely feature a sports betting market.

They even launched a sports betting show - The Daily Wager - years ago. Bettors are able to access the ESPN Bet sportsbook through their ESPN mobile apps, meaning the user experience will be second to none for sports fans betting in the online sportsbook market.

Pros

• Limiting winners:  Big winners are limited, in line with how other apps operate.
• Brand new app: The new app has kinks to work out. Although we can say with certainty that the new ESPN BET app is state-of-the-art, we should also point out that it is a new app, meaning there are some kinks to work out as well.
