In-form England international Raheem Sterling has seen his odds to win the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award more than halved over the international break.

The Manchester City star, who is spearheading the Premier League club’s quest for an unprecedented cup quadruple, has mirrored his club form for England over the past week.

Sterling scored four goals and added two assists as England twice notched five goals in routine wins over Czech Republic (5-0) and Montenegro (5-1), scoring a hat-trick in against the former.

In the Premier League, meanwhile, the 24-year-old is in the running to be top goalscorer with 15 to his name – currently just three goals shy of the lead – while he’s mustered 11 assists in the same competition so far this season.

However, it’s his England form which could propel him into the reckoning for the prestigious SPOTY award, which was won by Welsh Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas in 2018.

Indeed, Sterling has caught the eye of the bookmakers already offering odds on the 2019 winner, slashing the winger’s price from 33/1 to 16/1 over the past week.

At those odds, he’s still fairly far down the pecking order, but it’s a wide-open field of British athletes with the current favourite – sprinter Dina Asher-Smith – at the head of the market at a very speculative 9/1.

Meanwhile, online bookmakers Sportnation.bet report a surge of betting interest in Sterling producing a personal quadruple of his own.

With combined odds of 5800/1, the bookies claim football bettors are placing small stakes on a multiple of Sterling to be the Premier League's top scorer (20/1), make most assists (4/1), win the PFA Player of the Year (9/4) and finally the Sports Personality of the Year (16/1) in December.

Add that to the England winger's quest to win the quadruple with Manchester City and Sterling could have eight accolades to his name this year – and perhaps even nine if England can win the Nations League this summer (2/1).

The former Liverpool player is currently second favourite behind Virgil van Dijk in the race for PFA Player of the Year, while Manchester City are just 5/1 to win the three remaining tournaments they’re fighting for having already lifted the EFL Cup.

A spokesman for Sportnation.bet said: "With Raheem Sterling on fire at the minute, punters have seen the long price of a personal quadruple and realised it could well become a reality.

"They are clamouring to make maximum profit on this breath-taking accumulator before the odds inevitably drop."

"He is fast becoming a national idol and in the current form he is in, anything can happen."
