Who Will Sign Stefon Diggs Next? A Look At The Candidates
Diggs is headed back to the open market after the Patriots informed him they plan to release him on March 11, the start of the new league year. Diggs is now one of the more interesting veteran wide receiver names in free agency, and while there is not much hard team-specific buzz yet, several contender and WR-needy teams stand out as logical landing spots.
A Reunion in Buffalo with Josh Allen Dashed by DJ Moore Trade
Chief among those initially were the Buffalo Bills, who previously employed Diggs from 2020 through 2023, with the former Maryland Terrapins star hauling in 445 catches for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns across 66 games with the club.
Our initial thinking was that President of Football Ops Brandon Beane could move some deck chairs around to find room for Buffalo’s former No. 1 wideout this offseason.
Given the team’s need for explosive pass catchers, with QB Josh Allen failing to have one 1,000 yard receiver in 2025, it would have made a lot of sense for Beane and company to do whatever it takes to get the veteran of 161 NFL games back in town sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately, Beane instead made a move with the Bears for DJ Moore, all but ending any chance of Diggs going back to Buffalo.
If Not Buffalo for Diggs, Where Else?
For now, keep an eye on other wideout-needy AFC teams like the Baltimore Ravens (+400) and Pittsburgh Steelers (+550) to do so, with the New York Giants (+650) and Jets (+800) next in line followed by the San Francisco 49ers at +1000.
In the case of the Ravens and Steelers, two of the longest tenured head coaches in the NFL (John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin) have exited stage right, with Jesse Minter and Mike McCarthy taking their place in the Charm and Steel cities this football season.
Interestingly enough, Harbaugh’s new employer (the Giants) are also in line to potentially snatch up Diggs this offseason, with his former and current employers duking it out to land a player that’s amassed 11,504 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns with the Minnesota Vikings, Bills, Houston Texans and Patriots over the course of 11 NFL seasons.
When it comes to salary cap space, the Jets have the most room to offer (ranking fifth leaguewide at $73.1 million), while the Steelers are seventh overall at $43.8 million, followed by the Ravens (13th at $20.3 million), 49ers (16th at $14.2 million) and Giants (18th at $8.4 million).
We’ll know more about Diggs’ immediate future soon enough, with those six teams will be among the many that’ll inquire about the veteran pass catcher’s services, with the All-Pro from the Old-Line State likely to be on the market for a short period this offseason.
