Week 6 College Football Best Bets: Ghosts Of Wide Right Return

Miami visits Florida State in a big-time ACC/Sunshine State showdown.

The main event in our Week 6 College Football Best Bets brings us to Tallahassee, Florida. There, Florida State and Miami resume their annual rivalry in a game that has the feel of an epic 20th-century showdown between the schools.

This is the 70th meeting between FSU and Miami, with the Canes holding a 36-33 lead. The winner secures Sunshine State bragging rights. And grabs the inside track for a spot in the ACC championship game.

In 4 of their previous meetings, Miami won a close game after the Seminoles missed a field goal attempt wide right. And in 2002, Miami preserved its then-undefeated season with a 28-27 victory after FSU’s kicker missed a last-second field goal attempt wide left.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal played for the Hurricanes when they won the infamous “Wide Right” games in 1991 and ’92.

Week 6 College Football Best Bets: Game-By-Game Analysis

Friday, October 3

West Virginia at BYU, 10:30 p.m. (ESPN)

BUZZ: The Mountaineers aren’t built for these mountains. BYU pounces on multiple mistakes and opportunities. BYU QB Bear Bachmeier threw for 179 yards and 2 TDS, plus ran for another 98, as BYU held off Colorado in Boulder 24-21 late Saturday night. But the Cougars failed to cover on the 6.5-points. Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers had better be "Bear Aware" this week after getting wrecked at home by Utah 48-14. BYU's defense keeps West Vriginia in single-digits.

Best Bet: BYU -19.5 FanDuel via OddsJam

The Michigan Wolverines have their eyes on Wisconsin this week for a Big Ten clash at Ann Arbor. (USA TODAY)

Saturday, October 4
Kentucky at Georgia, 12 p.m. (ABC)

BUZZ: Kirby Smart and the Dawgs were gob-smacked Between The Hedges Saturday night by Alabama. Georgia trailed throughout the game, only scored once the second half and was shut out the entire 4th quarter in a 24-21 loss. Gunner Stockton's wide outs let him down. They'll do better this week. The Dawgs' defense puts its bite into these overwhelmed 'Cats. But they are 0-4 ATS this season. Georgia is 0-4 ATS this season. We'll pass on the 21.5 points and go with the under.

Best Bet: Under 50.5 Points (-110) FanDuel via OddsJam

Iowa State at Cincinnati, 12 p.m. (ESPN2)

BUZZ: The Cyclones (5-0 overall, 2-0 Big 12 and 3-1 ATS) appear headed for a Big 12 title game appearance. They wiped out Arizona 39-14 Saturday and could have scored 50. Scott Satterfield's Bearcarts clawed their way to a thrilling upset win at Kansas, scoring in the final minute to win 37-34 as 3-point road dogs. The winner grabs an inside track to the Big 12 title game. QBs Brendan Sorsby and Rocco Becht can score running or throwing the ballm and should deliver a Big 12 thriller that goes down to the final possession.

Best Bet: Iowa State -1.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Wisconsin at Michigan, 12 p.m. (FOX)

BUZZ: The highlight of this Week 6 College Football Best Bet will be Barstool Sports head honcho Dave Portnoy returning to the Michigan campus as part of the FOX Big Noon Kickoff crew. Even though Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell remains in the coaching hot seat, it’s hard to see a quasi-competitive Big Ten game being decided by 3 scores.

Best Bet: Wisconsin +16.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Illinois at Purdue, 12 p.m. (Big Ten)

BUZZ: The Boilermakers come off the bye. Illinois erased the trauma of their 53-point loss to Indiana two weeks ago with a last-second-field-goal 34-32 win over Lincoln Riley's top-25 USC Trojans Saturday in Champaign. QB Luke Altmyer missed just 6 of his 26 attempts, passing for 328 yards. The Illini forced a key fumble on USC's opening drive and picked off USC QB Jayden Maiava, a 1st this season. If the Good Illinois holds form this week, it will grab an easy road cover.

Best Bet: Illinois -9.5 (-114) DraftKings via OddsJam

Clemson at UNC, 12 p.m. (ESPN)

BUZZ: Bill Belichick’s transformation from NFL “Best Of All Time” to historic laughingstock continues. He and his squeeze were brilliantly mocked by UCF after the Knights beat UNC. Even with Clemson in free-fall and Dabo Swinney under siege, the Tigers stomp to a victory in a Week 6 College Football Best Bet best suited for “Cartoon Network." Dabo's been game-planning for this one since the Heels hired Belichick. The Hoodie's been preoccupied elsewhere and may have one foot out the door if the Dolphins or Giants lose this week.

Best Bet: Clemson -12.5 (-115) FanDuel via OddsJam

Kansas State at Baylor, 12 p.m. (ESPN+)

BUZZ: Kansas State handled UCF with ease 34-20 Saturday. The Bears, meanwhile, delivered a 45-28 win over the post-Mike Gundy Oklahoma State Cowboys Saturday, as QB Sawyer Robertson threw for 393 yards and TDs. They send K-State into Big 12 hibernation this week. This number jumped a point after it opened at 6.5. You've been warned.

Best Bet: Baylor -7.5 (-102) FanDuel via OddsJam

Oklahoma State at Arizona, 2 p.m. (TNT)

BUZZ: Oklahoma State and Arizona lost by a combined 42 points in Big 12 play Saturday. The Pokes continue life without Mike Gundy. Arizona coach Brent Brennan admits his team was overwhemled by the No. 14 Cyclones in their 39-14 loss. This week, Arizona takes advantage of their opponent at home for a solid bounce-back win. Asking for a three-score cover (16.5 points) is a bit much, however.

Best Bet: Under 54.4 Points (-110) FanDuel via OddsJam

Penn State at UCLA, 3:30 p.m. (CBS)

BUZZ: The Bruins have already fired their coach this season. The 0-4 and 1-4 ATS Bruins have only scored more than 2 TDs once this season. Penn State recovers on the West Coast after its monstrous letdown and OT loss to Oregon in Happy Valley. Penn State's offense woke up in the 4th quarter against Oregon. QB Drew Allar comes up roses this week in Pasadena. James Franklin only chokes against top-10 ranked opponents at home. He's a mastermind when it comes to patsies.

Best Bet: Penn State -26.5 (-110) Fanatics via OddsJam

Washington at Maryland, 3:30 p.m. (Big Ten Network)

BUZZ: The Terps surprised on the upside with a 4-0 start that included an impressive road win at Madison. The highlight for Washington it its 24-6 home loss to Ohio State occurred when Dubs The Husky showed up with aviators and a flight suit.

Best Bet: Maryland +7.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Texas at Florida, 3:30 p.m. (ESPN)

BUZZ: The Gators continually find ways to stumble over themselves. Their defense, however, contends with any in the SEC, especially in The Swamp. But that offense and those turnovers. Yikes. Billy Napier’s status won’t shift from "on thin ice" until a marquee win this season. If Arch Manning and the Longhorns are going to trip on a road in a game they should win easily, this would be it.

Best Bet: Florida +7.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Boise State at Notre Dame, 3:30 p.m. (NBC)

BUZZ: The Irish fell flat against their 2 ranked opponents this season, but will get their playoff berth if they run the table. The Fighting Irish beat up Arkansas 56-13 Saturday. This week, Boise State plays the cupcake. And the Irish need to win big each week just impress the CFB Playoff voters,

Best Bet: Notre Dame -16.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Vanderbilt at Alabama, 3:30 p.m. (TBD)

BUZZ: A pair of ranked and unbeaten-in-the SEC teams fight to stay alive in the conference championship derby in our Week 6 College Football Best Bets. Alabama and Vanderbilt meet in Tuscaloosa. A year ago, the Commodores won this game in Nashville, and their delirious fans carried the goal posts two miles down Broadway and tossed them into the Tennessee River. The goal posts inside Saban Field aren’t going anywhere this week. Kalen DeBoer secured his job for the rest of thie season by leading the Tide to a 24-21 victory over Georgia Between The Hedges Saturday night. Alabama QB Ty Simpson passed for 276 yards, 2 TDs, and silenced the masses in Athens. Heisman Hype anyone? Vandy scored 55 points, but allowed 35 points, in a win over Utah State. 35 points to Utah State? Bama's offense will "Ty" one on this week.

Best Bet: Alabama -13.5 (-110) FanDuel via OddsJam

Texas Tech at Houston, 7 p.m. (ESPN)

BUZZ: Leave it to Houston to detail Texas Tech’s road to a Big 12 championship game. Or at least grab the backdoor cover at home. The Red Raiders come off the bye and an impressive win over Utah. But the narrative in the Big 12 changes every week.

Best Bet: Houston +9.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Minnesota at Ohio State, 7:30 p.m. (NBC)

BUZZ: Big Ten Saturday Night takes a giant step back from Oregon at Penn State. Ohio State continues its Big Ten rampage after a 24-6 yawner of a win at Washington. The Bucks overpower their opponents 2nd half. Matt Patricia's defense ranks among the best FBS schools in points allowed. But Ohio State's offense has yet to impress. It doesn't have to. No reason to sweat this 23.5-point number. Go with the OSU defense.

Best Bet: Under 46.5 Points (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Miami at Florida State, 7:30 p.m. (ABC)

BUZZ: In the words of the late, great, Keith Jackson, we’ve got a “humdinger” in Tallahassee this week. This one tops our Week 6 College Football Best Bets. The Canes and Seminoles meet for the 70th time. Florida State got caught looking ahead to this game with its OT loss at Virginia Friday night (as 7.5-point favorites.) The winner this week secures Sunshine State bragging rights. Miami’s ferocious front on both sides of the ball dominates here. They won’t leave this one up to the kickers. We locked in Miami at -4. The number rose to 6 on Sunday.

Best Bet: Miami -4 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Mississippi State at Texas A&M, 7:30 p.m. (SEC Network)

BUZZ: Mississippi State owns a 5-0 record ATS, tied for tops among all FBS teams.Texas A&M scored 40 or more points in its first three games, including a sweet upset of Notre Dame in South Bend. The Aggies play host to their second SEC opponent in 2 weeks after getting caught on the hook as 6.5-point favorites in a 16-10 win over Auburn. Expect more from their offense this week.

Best Bet: Texas A&M -11.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam

Colorado at TCU, 7:30 p.m. (ESPN2)

BUZZ: The Buffaloes lack consistency this season and could fade quickly in the Big 12. BYU caught Colorado with a last-minute score in the Buffs' 24-21 loss Saturday. The Horned Frogs flex at home here, coming off the bye.

Best Bet: TCU -13.5 (-110) DraftKings via OddsJam
