Take heart, West Virginia online sports bettors. You are back in business and able to place online sports betting wagers in The Mountaineer State.

Today.

Just in time for the upcoming football season, mobile sports betting is back in West Virginia after months of inactivity. That’s thanks to the partnership between The Greenbrier casino in White Sulphur Springs and industry leader FanDuel, according to a Greenbrier release.

“We have a great partnership with The Greenbrier that made today happen,” Kevin Hennessy, Director of Publicity for FanDuel Group, told bookies.com. “We know West Virginia has been waiting for online and mobile sports betting for a long time and we can’t wait to get started.”

The newest mobile option in West Virginia was open for business starting at 6 a.m. local time on Monday, with a robust betting menu that included offerings for baseball, basketball, boxing, darts, football, golf, hockey, mixed martial arts, rugby, soccer, tennis and other sports.

This is the second mobile betting site to launch in the state this year. But the previous app, BetLucky, which was rolled out by casino operator Delaware North and technology partner Miomni Gaming in late January, was shelved after just one month of operation because of contractual disputes.

But this new mobile betting app, powered by FanDuel and available right now, is here to stay. It’s available for both iOS and Android phone users, according to FanDuel’s press release, for West Virginia residents over age 21.

Also, those within West Virginia who use existing FanDuel fantasy sports accounts will be able to connect to the sportsbook and even “use fantasy sports and sportsbook winnings interchangeably,” according to the company’s release.

FanDuel Beats DraftKings in Race to Market

The Greenbrier’s launch of a DraftKings sportbook is a mild upset to those following the story about which of the companies currently positioned to launch a mobile sports betting site in West Virginia would be the first to market this go-round.

Many believed the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town, which planned the launch of a DraftKings Sportsbook back in May before lingering governmental oversight questions around how to interpret and therefore protect mobile betting operations from the Federal Wire Act of 1961, would probably be the first to launch.

While the launch of the DraftKings site will likely still happen soon, FanDuel quietly moved into the lead position in the race to earn the trust and loyalty of West Virginian sports bettors.

Other potential rollouts include the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in New Cumberland, through a partnership with William Hill, and Delaware North, which probably will remain in a holding pattern for the foreseeable future after the failure of BetLucky.

West Virginia Mobile Sports Betting Options

Regardless, whatever happens with the rest of the forthcoming mobile betting sites in West Virginia, state residents and visitors now have a mobile sports betting option when it comes to the upcoming NFL and college football seasons.

With the West Virginia Mountaineers entering a critical season under new head coach Neal Brown and Mountain State football fans looking forward to following their favorite NFL teams – which according to Forbes.com is the Pittsburgh Steelers by a wide margin – football betting fans 21 years old and older in the state won’t have to leave their houses this year to place their bets.

It’s by far the busiest betting season in the U.S. overall, and now West Virginians have a way to safely and legally make sports bets online via one of the leading online sports betting platforms in the country, FanDuel.
