As the odds indicate, the Michigan Wolverines going on the road to face the Oklahoma Sooners is the heavy, heavy favorite to be the site for College GameDay Week 2. There are a couple reasons for that.
First, as of the time of publication, this is the only Week 2 game featuring Top 25 teams facing each other. Second, even if they weren’t ranked, a matchup of two of college football’s legendary programs would likely be enticing enough.
Michigan and Oklahoma have faced each other just once, and that came nearly a half-century ago. On New Year’s Day 1976, the then-third-ranked Sooners, coached by Barry Switzer, beat the then fifth-ranked Wolverines, coached by Bo Schembechler, 14-6 in the Orange Bowl.
With top-ranked Ohio State losing in the Rose Bowl that same day, and No. 2 Texas A&M falling to Southern Cal 10 days earlier in the Liberty Bowl, Oklahoma’s Orange Bowl victory catapulted the Sooners to No. 1, giving them their second straight AP national title.
Michigan, Oklahoma Offer Intriguing Storylines
Jump back to this year, and you’ll find both schools are still making headlines. Michigan’s is well-known. The NCAA tsk-tsked them a couple of weeks ago after an investigation confirmed the Wolverines benefitted from a years-long scheme to steal signals from their opponents.
Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore, who graduated from Oklahoma, was also suspended two games this season and one next year for his role in the incident as he deleted more than 50 texts between him and mastermind Connor Stallions regarding the scheme. Curiously, that suspension will be for games in Week 3 and 4, meaning he’ll be on the sidelines in Norman on Sept. 6.
Meanwhile, the Sooners enter their second season in the SEC. Oklahoma has been to the College Football Playoff four times, all when it involved just the top four teams. OU has yet to win a game in the playoffs.
The home game against the Wolverines is one of what will likely be seven games against ranked opponents this season. The schedule includes a grueling five-game stretch in October and November against Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Alabama. Those five teams are currently in the AP Top 25. Two weeks after Bama, the Sooners end the regular season against LSU, another currently ranked foe.
Oddsmakers believe the Sooners won’t make it out of that gauntlet. At Fanatics, Oklahoma’s odds to make the 12-team playoff are +450. To win it all, Fanatics’ oddsmakers price OU at +5000.
Game Information
Michigan-Oklahoma will be a nationally televised game on ABC. It’s set to kick off at 7:30 pm ET on Sept. 6.
DraftKings currently has the Sooners as a three-point favorite at home over Michigan, with both spreads priced at -110. No moneyline odds are currently available for the game at BetMGM for now, and the total is set at 47.5 points. The over (-115) currently is a slight favorite against the under (-105).
