Some 28 years after their last appearance, Scotland are back in the World Cup. An impressive qualifying campaign saw them top their group thanks to dramatic late goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean in the final game, a 4-2 win over Denmark.

Confidence was through the roof after they claimed a 1-0 win over Haiti in their opening group game, putting them in an excellent position to qualify for the knockouts, but they were unable to land a glove on Morocco on Friday night and offered very little in their 3-0 defeat to Brazil.

Having come so close to qualifying for previous World Cups but never quite managing to get over the hump, just being in the 2026 edition is a grand achievement in itself. Their results in the group stage have put them in a very precarious position that means they probably won't qualify for the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams, however anything is possible in this format.

Scotland’s World Cup record isn’t the most flattering with eight appearances and eight group-stage exits. In that time they’ve only won four and drawn seven of the 23 games they’ve played, although they were only knocked out on goal difference in 1974, 1978 and 1982.
