It doesn’t matter what the sport is … fans are going to complain.

They’re going to complain at the professional level, and they’re also going to complain at the collegiate level. And while some people don’t care about college sports, there are those that care maybe too much.

But when it comes to intercollegiate sports, specifically NCAA Division I college football, we wanted to find out which team, and which conference, is home to fans that complain the most.

We surveyed 2,000 college football fans and asked them about their opinions on the Power Five conferences.

Which NCAA Football Fans Complain the Most? 1

It may come as no surprise, but the Alabama Crimson Tide comes in first for fans who complain the most. With 18 national titles, those fans are used to winning, and probably don’t like it when they lose. Pretty sure Nick Saban doesn’t. Roll Tide!

Complaining fans aren’t only found at SEC schools, several Big Ten teams are in the top five for college complainers. Fans of The Ohio State University come in at No. 2 for top complainers, and although fans of the Buckeyes are most likely to complain about the referees, they can’t complain about the lack of “The” in this study.

In a rivalry that they can never seem to win, the Michigan Wolverines fall just behind the Buckeyes and rank third for the most complaints. Despite being supporters of the all-time winningest college football program, Wolverines fans still find a way to complain and tend to use a “victim mentality” the most.

Finishing out the top five comes the Florida Gators and Notre Dame. No longer allowed to do the “Gator Bait” chant or Gator chomp at games, it appears fans have to settle for yelling and heckling during games, leading to their No. 4 ranking for college complainers. Notre Dame, whose Irish fans also use a “victim mentality” when it comes to whining, come in at No. 5 in our rankings. At least they aren’t fighting.

Top Complainers by Conference

We also looked at how the different conferences (sorry, Notre Dame) rank when it comes to complaining. The most dominant conference, the SEC, comes in first, which should come as no surprise. Alabama takes first for SEC schools with the top complainers, followed by Florida, Texas A&M, LSU and Tennessee. Just another SEC championship title ‘Bama can add to its resume.

The Big Ten, which thinks it's the most dominant conference, comes in second for conference complainers. Ohio State and Michigan are followed by Penn State, Michigan State, and Iowa.

The PAC-12 comes in third, with UCLA taking the top spot as conference complainer. UCLA is followed by Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford and Arizona. The Big 12 ranks fourth, with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Iowa State as the top conference schools with the most whiners.

Finally, we have the ACC, which boasts Florida State, Duke, Clemson, Miami and Pitt as the top five conference schools whose fans complain the most.

Methodology

In October 2021, we surveyed 2,000 college football fans from around the country to ask them about their opinions on NCAA football fan bases and the Power Five conferences; 50% of respondents were male and 50% were female. The average age of respondents was 30.
