As spring turns to summer, the “WNBA Head Coach Hot Seat” begins to warm across the Association. The WNBA entered its 30th season with a new deal that pays its players more than ever before. While one can argue over the “profitability” of WNBA franchises, their value continues to increase exponentially.

Meanwhile, expansion sits just beyond the horizon.

Caitlin Clark plays to sellouts each night. TV audiences, and sports betting and prediction market trading numbers, keep setting records. With all that comes greater expectations throughout the league. Fans across the Association want winners.

The “WNBA Head Coach Hot Seat” feels the hottest in Chicago. It appears the Sky may be indeed the limit for beleaguered head coach Tyler Marsh. Chicago dropped 9 of its first 13 games, including 8 of 9 entering this week. The Sky struggle with slow starts, poor rebounding, and inconsistent shooting -- issues players insist are fixable, but which haven't been fixed.

Marsh has publicly taken blame and defended his players, while veterans like Natasha Cloud and Kamilla Cardoso have acknowledged their own shortcomings. Still, talk alone won't save his job.

Marsh is the clear frontrunner on the hot seat. Chicago has struggled to build a consistent winning culture, and the Sky are expected to once again fall short of championship expectations. A third season without meaningful playoff progress would put his job firmly in jeopardy.

Tibbetts inherited a Mercury franchise with high expectations and some foundational talent but has yet to deliver a deep postseason run. Phoenix's front office has not been shy about making changes, and continued underperformance could accelerate a coaching decision.

Raman has been tasked with rebuilding a Storm program coming off a franchise transition period. Seattle is a storied franchise with championship DNA, and patience has limits. Results — particularly in developing younger talent — will define her job security heading into 2026.

Which WNBA Coach Will Be Fired Next?

Here’s a brief look at each coach on our list.

Tyler Marsh - Chicago Sky

For the Sky, they need to at least play .500 basketball over the next few weeks if Marsh is to make it to the season's end. The return of injured point guard Courtney Vandersloot -- who's been practicing since June 5 -- should provide some needed floor leadership to stabilize the offense.

If losses continue, however, pressure on Marsh will intensify. Whether or not he gets a break as a first-time coach remains in the hands of upper management. But Chicago’s recent history doesn’t bode well for Marsh. The Sky fired Teresa Weatherspoon in 2024 after just one losing season.

Nate Tibbetts - Phoenix Mercury

The Mercury reached the WNBA Finals a season ago, before getting swept by Las Vegas. While the Mercury falls in the standings, the mercury continues to rise on The “WNBA Head Coach Hot Seat” for Nate Tibbetts. His team won just 4 of 15 games in the season’s first half. The Mercury carry plenty of talent on their roster. Kahleah Copper poured in 41 points during Phoenix’s 111-102 loss to the LA Sparks over the weekend. Tibbetts needs to push urgency, while keeping his team focused on the fundamentals.

Sonia Raman - Seattle Storm

The Storm’s season has been more drizzle than deluge. Seattle holds the worst record in the West at 3-12. The 4X WNBA champions hired Sonia Raman ahead of this season after her run as an assistant with the New York Liberty, and tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies. The team heralded her hiring as the first Indian American head coach in WNBA history. Her dismissal after just one season would be a surprise.

Jose Fernandez - Dallas Wings

The Wings have taken flight this year, after losing 65 of 84 games during the previous two seasons. Jose Fernandez’s team remains poised to make the postseason for the first time since it relocated to Dallas from Tulsa in 2016. Everything is bigger in Texas, including the expectations for this team, led by all-universe point guard Paige Bueckers. She’s averaging 19.8 points and 5.8 assists, but remains day-to-day due to injury. Any slippage in the second half of the season could spell trouble for Fernandez.

Rachid Meziane - Connecticut Sun

Rachid Meziane joined the Sun as the WNBA’s first European coach ahead of last season. The WNBA’s Sun sets on New England this season. Connecticut relocates to Houston starting in 2027. The Sun hold the worst record in the WNBA at 2-13. Clearly, the team has already checked out of the Mohegan Sun Resort. Will Meziane be part of the plan for next season?
