The Browns remain active in their search for a quarterback as free agency enters its second week. If they manage to secure the services of Russell Wilson or Kirk Cousins, the market will certainly shift away from Penn State DL Abdul Carter.

Cleveland holds the No. 2 pick in the upcoming April NFL Draft. The team recently signed All-World defensive end Myles Garrett to a costly long-term deal, following his trade request.

Meanwhile, the Browns remain in a difficult position at quarterback due to their commitment to Deshaun Watson.

Watson has been plagued by off-field legal issues, an NFL suspension in 2022, and injuries over the past two seasons. Since joining the Browns three years ago, he has played only 19 games. To create financial flexibility, the team restructured Watson’s contract, freeing up $36 million in cap space for the 2025 season. This suggests that Cleveland is positioning itself to acquire one of the remaining big-name quarterbacks in free agency.

Potential Browns First Pick: Player Breakdown

Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State (+125)

Penn State’s Abdul Carter is regarded as the most promising defensive player in this draft. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he is graded as an "Elite" prospect and a "Pro Bowl Talent," topping his position group at the combine. Carter was a dominant force at Penn State, leading all FBS teams with 23.5 tackles for loss and ranking seventh in sacks with 12—against some of the toughest offensive lines in the Big Ten.

If the Browns secure a starting quarterback in free agency, Carter's draft odds could skyrocket. He would be a no-brainer at No. 1 for a team that doesn’t need a QB, but with this draft being deep in defensive linemen and relatively thin at quarterback, the Browns may still prioritize a signal-caller.

Cam Ward, QB, Miami (+250)

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward possesses all the tools of a modern NFL passer. However, will he still be available when the Browns make their selection?

Ward had an outstanding season after transferring from Washington State, finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting and winning the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback. He set a Miami school record with 39 passing touchdowns—an impressive feat considering the program’s storied history at the position. Ward also posted the highest quarterback score at the combine, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado (+300)

If only Deshaun Watson had worked out at quarterback…

Travis Hunter was a two-way standout for Deion Sanders at Colorado and is considered a stronger prospect at cornerback than wide receiver in the NFL. His versatility and natural playmaking ability make him an intriguing prospect for any team. NFL Next Gen Stats graded him as a “Year 1 Starter” and an “Elite” talent at the combine.

Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado (+500)

Shedeur Sanders is considered the second-best quarterback in this draft, but Ward is the safer and more polished option.

If the Browns fail to secure a quarterback in free agency and Ward is taken by the Titans with the No. 1 overall pick, Cleveland may have no choice but to turn to Sanders. While he has shown promise, the Browns will need to decide whether he is a franchise-caliber quarterback or if they should look elsewhere to solve their QB dilemma.
