Some college football players like to wait a bit rather than jump directly into the transfer portal. Quarterbacks especially. There’s a massive domino effect where every transfer QB coming or going can have immediate implications for other programs.  Keep this in mind when checking out your college football picks.

After taking his time to survey the scene, senior Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson has decided to explore the market. This is good news for schools looking for a plug-and-play option in 2024. Jefferson is one of the most battle-tested players in the entire sport.

He’ll be entering his sixth year of eligibility having already started three full seasons with the Razorbacks, culminating with a highly disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2023, but Jefferson is hoping brighter days are ahead as he sets his sights on a new destination and a fresh start with a new school to cap a long, eventful college career.

KJ Jefferson Potential Landing Spots

Jefferson has been at it for a while in Fayetteville as a member of the 2019 recruiting class, posting 7,923 passing yards and 67 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 1,876 yards with 21 additional scores on the ground over five seasons with the Razorbacks.

It’s pretty unusual to see schools add new players with such immense experience. There are some intriguing options given Jefferson’s unique skill set and several schools in need of immediate help at QB for 2024.

The most likely destination includes a personal connection at TCU. Kendal Briles is the new offensive coordinator in Fort Worth and he oversaw the best days of Jefferson’s career at Arkansas, including a personal best 2022 season which included 2,648 passing yards and 33 total touchdowns.

Quarterback Chandler Morris just announced he’s leaving the Horned Frogs program to enter the transfer portal, so there’s an immediate need. In terms of potential impact and connection with the staff, the Horned Frogs seem like a home run for both parties.

Looking at other potential win-wins, UCF makes a lot of sense. The Knights’ QBs have produced at a high level under coach Gus Malzahn and central Florida certainly isn’t the worst place to spend your final year of college eligibility.

One of the biggest questions for UCF and other suitors in the NIL era is whether or not they have the resources. Jefferson will have plenty of teams offering big bucks for his services and we don’t know if UCF will be in the market to spend big for a one-year player.

Given his talent and the unique opportunity to grab such an established signal-caller, they might be able to pull it off given the opportunity.

Miami doesn’t have to worry about such matters. The Hurricanes have more than enough NIL support to nab a top name in the portal, and that’s exactly what they’re looking to do this year at quarterback.

They’ve already been in talks with some of the biggest names out there, but they haven’t taken the next step and will be looking to move soon as the dominos continue to fall.

There was initially some smoke surrounding South Carolina once word got out that Jefferson would be entering the portal, but those talks have reportedly slowed down.

There’s another staff connection there with former Arkansas assistant Dowell Loggins taking over as the Gamecocks’ offensive coordinator.

It’s possible things could change if Jefferson doesn’t like what he hears from other top choices, but for now, this seems less likely than the top three.

The same goes for Ohio State and Auburn. Two big-time programs in which Jefferson could potentially thrive. However, the Buckeyes and Tigers will have a lot of options and are continuing to explore all possibilities.

In terms of finding a place where he’s welcomed with open arms and handed the keys to a potential juggernaut offense, we don’t see a better fit than TCU
