Heading into the preseason, no quarterback in recent memory had more hype surrounding him than No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray.

Murray is by far the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year with odds of +175 at 888Sport. The player with the second-highest odds is running back Josh Jacobs, but he is far behind Murray at +1000. But after his somewhat shaky preseason performance, how should you bet on Kyler Murray in the 2019 season? Here are some bets to make and some to fade.

Avoid Betting on Kyler Murray to win Offensive Rookie of the Year (+175)

With Kyler Murray’s Offensive Rookie of the Year odds being so high and the payoff being so low, it’s best to avoid betting on him. Will he be in contention? Of course. But there is a lot of risk involved in betting on Murray.

Over the last six years, we have seen the award go to non-quarterbacks five times (Eddie Lacy, Odell Beckham Jr., Todd Gurley, Alvin Kamara, and Saquon Barkley.) The only exception was Dak Prescott, who led his team to a 13-3 record. If Murray is going to win the award, he is likely going to have to put up big stats and lead the Cardinals to a winning record.

And if that happens, there are better bets on the board you should consider taking over Murray to the award, as we will outline next.

Take Arizona Cardinals to Finish 2nd in NFC West (+1100)

If you are convinced Murray is going to be a top-flight quarterback right away in the NFL and is going to win a lot of games for the Cardinals, you can currently get them to finish second in the NFC West at +1100 at 888Sport.

Feeling bolder, they are currently +2500 to finish first in the division over the Rams, Seahawks and 49ers. While Arizona finishing first or second in the division seems unlikely, it’s a much better bet than taking Murray to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, considering the odds.

Bet on Kyler Murray over 21.5 Passing TDs (-110)

If you have watched any of the Cardinals in the preseason, you will have noticed that they have struggled to stop anyone, and that includes the likes of Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman.

With cornerback Patrick Peterson suspended for the first six games of the season and No. 2 cornerback Robert Alford lost for a significant amount of time, the Cardinals have a chance to be an all-time bad defense in 2019.

That means Kyler Murray is going to be put into a situation where he has to throw the ball. A lot. Arizona is going to be in a lot of shoot-out games and that will force the Cardinals to abandon the run. With Murray’s passing touchdown total being set at 21.5, he should be easily able to surpass that number by November.

Consider Kyler Murray to Lead NFL in Passing Yards (+6000)

If you are looking for a fun, longshot bet on Murray, look no further than him to lead the league in passing yards. What number would he likely have to get to? Over the last five seasons, the leading passer in the NFL threw for 4,947 yards on average.

While that does seem awfully high for a rookie quarterback, no player has ever entered an Air-Raid passing scheme like Murray has. If the Cardinals do get into a lot of shootouts and Kliff Kingsbury’s offense is as dynamic as many believe it will be, 60-1 odds here for Murray is worth a gamble.
