The New England Patriots hold the No. 4 pick in the April NFL Draft. They have multiple options: they can keep the pick, trade it to move up or down, or use it to acquire additional assets.

The Patriots enter the 2025 NFL season with their third head coach in three years. That’s a striking contrast, considering their first coach on that list — Bill Belichick — held the position from 2000 until he was fired by Robert Kraft after the 2023 season. Rookie coach Jerod Mayo was dismissed after just one season following a second consecutive 4-13 campaign.

For 2025, former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel returns to Foxborough as head coach, de facto general manager, and the franchise’s decision-maker. Josh McDaniels oversees the offense, but it has become clear during free agency that Vrabel is making personnel decisions. Nine of the first 14 free-agent signings by the Patriots this offseason have been on the defensive side of the ball. Notable acquisitions include former Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams ($63 million guaranteed), cornerback Carlton Davis III ($34.5 million guaranteed), and linebackers Robert Spillane ($20.6 million guaranteed) and Harold Landry III ($26 million guaranteed).

On offense, the Patriots finally broke the emergency glass by landing WR Stefon Diggs for 3 years, with $26 million guaranteed. He'll be the No. 1 target at wide receiver for second-year quarterback Drake Maye. Diggs is coming off ACL surgery but could be ready for Week 1. He joins wide receiver Mack Hollins, who signed a one-year deal worth up to $10.5 million and right tackle Morgan Moses securing $11 million guaranteed. The team reportedly pursued multiple high-profile WRs, including Cooper Kupp and Chris Godwin.

The Patriots still need a primary left tackle and a long-term solution at center following the departure of David Andrews

With the NFL Draft approaching, Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has compiled hypothetical NFL odds for whom the Patriots might select with their first pick this year.

Potential Patriots First Pick: Player Breakdown

Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado (+200)

Travis Hunter was a dynamic two-way player for Deion Sanders at Colorado and is projected to be a stronger prospect at cornerback than at wide receiver in the NFL. His versatility and playmaking ability make him a valuable asset for any team. NFL Next Gen Stats graded him as a “Year 1 Starter” and an “Elite” talent at the combine.

The Patriots could use Hunter in various offensive sets while also strengthening their secondary. They would gladly take him if available, considering they dropped from the No. 1 pick to No. 4 after their unexpected Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills. Whether Hunter is still on the board could primarily depend if Browns (No. 2) address their quarterback needs in free agency. Or if the Giants swipe him after signing free-agent QB Russell Wilson

Kelvin Banks, T, Texas (+300)

The Patriots’ offensive line is in dire condition. They recently released veteran center David Andrews, the last remaining player from their Super Bowl-winning teams. After failing to sign a top-tier left tackle in free agency, the team has a glaring hole at the position.

At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks fits the prototype for the position. He excelled at the combine, particularly in arm length (33 ¼ inches), surpassing the critical 33-inch threshold for NFL left tackles. NFL Next Gen Stats ranked him as the No. 4 offensive tackle in the draft, projecting him to become a “Good Starter Within Two Years.” The Patriots may need him ready much sooner.

Mason Graham, DL, Michigan (+400)

Michigan’s Mason Graham was the highest-rated defensive tackle at the combine, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. He is widely considered the second-best defensive player in the draft behind Penn State’s Abdul Carter.

There’s little doubt that Graham would make an immediate impact in the NFL. However, given how much the Patriots have already bolstered their defense in free agency, drafting Graham would be a luxury they can’t afford—especially with their offensive insufficiencies.

Will Campbell, T, LSU (+450)

In a pre-analytics era, Will Campbell would have been a no-brainer for the Patriots. The 6-foot-6, 319-pound tackle was the anchor of LSU’s offensive line, protecting Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and fending off top SEC pass rushers for three seasons.

However, Campbell’s arm length measured 32 5/8 inches, falling just short of the 33-inch benchmark for left tackles. Despite this, he was graded as the No. 2 offensive tackle at the combine. Given the Patriots’ dire need at the position, he remains a strong candidate at No. 4.

Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona (+900)

Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan is the top full-time wide receiver in this draft class, making him an intriguing option for the Patriots. He delivered a solid combine performance, ranking as the No. 2 overall WR prospect (behind Travis Hunter).

McMillan is projected to become a “Good Starter Within Two Years,” offering Drake Maye a sizable target at 6-foot-4. If the Patriots prioritize a wide receiver over a left tackle, McMillan is a logical choice.

Will Johnson, CB, Michigan (+1100)

Will Johnson played a crucial role in Michigan’s 2023 National Championship defense. His interception on the first play of the second half in the title game against Michael Penix Jr. (now with the Falcons) swung momentum in favor of the Wolverines.

Johnson is regarded as a "Boom-or-Bust" prospect by NFL Next Gen Stats, but he is the top-ranked cornerback in this draft class. If the Patriots believe in his upside, he could be a surprise pick at No. 4.
