The Cam Newton Era in Carolina appears to be nearing an end.

With the Panthers on the verge of signing free agent QB Teddy Bridgewater to a deal, the Panthers have given their nine-year quarterback and former NFL MVP permission to seek a trade. If he doesn’t get traded, he’ll likely get cut. Releasing Newton before June saves a whopping $19.1 million in cap space.

Teams that are really interested will want to force the issue with a trade. And teams will be interested. FanDuel has posted odds on where Newton ends up for those interested in NFL betting.

Cam Newton’s Next Team Odds

Washington Redskins +125
New England Patriots +170
Miami Dolphins +250
Jacksonville Jaguars+900
Las Vegas Raiders +1000
Denver Broncos +1800
Pittsburgh Steelers +2900
Cincinnati Bengals +4500

All odds are current as of publication on March 18 and subject to change.

Bookies.com breaks down the NFL futures betting odds and reveals a value pick on Newton’s next team.

What Newton Brings

Newton, who will be 31 for the start of the 2020 NFL season, won the NFL MVP award in 2015 when he led the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler.

He’s also coming off a season where he played just two games because of a foot injury and he missed the end of the 2018 season with a shoulder injury. Newton has been given a clean bill of health, however new Carolina head coach Matt Rhule appears poised to move forward with Bridgewater.

Teams In Need

The Chicago Bears were the odds-on favorite to land Newton until lunchtime Wednesday, when they made a trade for Nick Foles.

Then the Los Angeles Chargers became favorites, until they announced later in the afternoon they’d be riding with Tyrod Taylor.

Wednesday morning there were 13 teams on the board, now just eight are considered contenders.

Of those eight, three have a clear-cut starter ready to go in 2020. The Steelers may need a backup, but Newton would be an expensive insurance policy for the returning Ben Roethlisberger. The Broncos, meanwhile, are set to give Drew Lock a chance to be the starter after five OK starts to end his rookie season. And Derek Carr is likely going to be the guy in Las Vegas, even if Coach Jon Gruden isn’t all-in on is signal-caller.

The Bengals and Dolphins should secure QBs of the future in the draft. Neither is in a prime position to compete immediately, though Miami is making a case after a strong start to free agency, especially in an AFC East without Tom Brady.

That narrows the field to just a few teams may be inspired enough to make a deal.

Washington Redskins

Cam Newton would be an upgrade over Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

Dwayne Haskins did not have a great rookie season, with seven TDs and seven INTs in seven starts. Adding Newton would be an upgrade, but the cost may be too high for a team that is clearly in a rebuild with a defense that ranked 27th and a porous offensive line; Washington was No.22 in run offense in 2019.

New England Patriots

The Patriots might want a veteran to compete with Jarrett Stidham.

For the first time in two decades, the Patriots have a QB situation. If Bill Belichick wants to keep the train rolling, it likely isn’t going to be with Jarrett Stidham under center, or a rookie.

Newton would be a big change from Brady, but would be a proven winner when healthy. Other potential QB additions are being snapped up — Newton and Jameis Winston may be the best-available options now.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars traded Foles to the Bears on Wednesday, presumably putting the key to the offense in the hands of Gardner Minshew.

Minshew may be a risky choice coming into just his second year. But if 2020 is a bust, the Jaguars might be in position to select one of the marquee QBs expected to be in next year’s NFL Draft, led by Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields.

Minshew is also a far cheaper choice than Newton, among other NFL starters.

Conclusion

Haskins had one of the great collegiate careers in recent history and deserves an off-season to prepare after being thrown into the fire in 2019 with limited help around him. Minshew is a high-risk, high-reward choice in Jacksonville, but the Jaguars appear willing to take the leap.

As far as New England is concerned, Newton is volatile — on and off the field — but Belichick has not been shy about taking on risks. If they Patriots are going to acquire a veteran QB, options are about down to Newton, Winston and Andy Dalton. I don’t think it will be Winston.

If the Panthers can’t trade Newton, he’s likely to be cut. The Patriots may not have as much cap space as other teams, but they offer opportunity — Super Bowl opportunity. That should appeal to Cam. Look for the New England to seal the deal, one way or another.
