There will be no Triple Crown winner in horse racing for 2024, but the final leg of the three-stage event, the Belmont Stakes, features winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, and many of the top finishers from those previous showdowns. 

The 2024 Belmont Stakes goes to post on Saturday, June 8 at 6:41 p.m. ET from Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. 

Bookies.com handicapper Adam Thompson has been crushing horse racing for the last three years. Last year he cashed on eight of the 13 races at the Belmont Stakes Saturday, and won more than half the races at this year’s Preakness Stakes.

Thompson just missed on a big payday at last year’s Kentucky Derby but got paid on six of the seven other races plus a massive 42/1 Exacta Box to finish up huge on the weekend. Then came the Preakness, in which he hit on both the Exacta and Trifecta for another massive weekend finish. 

Now he has set his sights on the 2024 Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown.

SIERRA LEONE (#9, 2-1 odds as of June 6) has never finished lower than second place in any of his five career starts. The Chad Brown-trained horse with a first-class pedigree is the favorite here, but there are other good horses in the field, and at better horse racing odds at top sportsbook.

So we’re riding with MYSTIK DAN (#3, 6-1), who edged out Sierra Leone to win the Kentucky Derby, then finished second at the Preakness to SEIZE THE GREY (#1, 5-2). Seize The Grey used the added length of the Preakness to score the win. The Belmont, however, is the same length as the Derby. 

MINDFRAME (#10, 8-1) is a bit of a wild card in that the horse has just two races, neither of them was against top-level talent, but he won both in such dominating fashion that it opened eyes. The Todd Pletcher horse boasted speed figures at a win at Churchill Downs in May, at this distance, which was better than any race any other horse in this field has reached. We’re including him in our bets. 

Our ultimate wild card is DORNOCH (#6, 18-1), who had won three straight races before taking fourth at the Blue Grass Stakes in April and a distant 10th at the Derby. Still, the entrant for trainer Danny Gargan bested Sierra Leone in one of those victories, and has won races at longer and shorter distances. Dornoch has struggled with the traffic of busy racetracks, but with just 10 in this field (there were 20 in the Derby), he has the talent to sneak in. 

We are not entirely fading Seize The Grey, whose speed numbers and inconsistency are too much to rely on. But he’s not our pick to win it all.
