First Big Name Change
The shift from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America went into effect on Monday. That means the FAA, NOAA weather reports, and all other official government communications will refer to the body of water that lies between Texas and Florida as the Gulf of America.
The change to the Gulf of America from the Gulf of Mexico was seen by users of Google Maps who were in the United States as of Monday night.
Name Changes Underway On Land And Sea
President Trump has also signaled his intent to officially change the name of Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley. No matter the name, it remains the tallest peak in North America.
The Department of Defense, at the president’s request, has begun to rename several military bases. Their names were changed during the Biden Administration. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued the order to rename Fort Liberty back to its previous name, Fort Bragg, on Monday. This time, the military installation will be named in honor of an American soldier who served heroically in World War II (Private First Class Roland L. Bragg) and not Confederate General Braxton Bragg, its former namesake.

And on legal trading sites such as Kalshi in the United States. That platform offers trading shares on multiple political outcomes, as well as limited sporting events, the Oscars, weather events, business moves, and other cultural items of note. It did more than $27 million worth of trading on the outcome of the Super Bowl.
Lake New York? Don’t Bet Against It
President Trump has spoken often about Canada becoming the 51st state. A name change of Lake Ontario to Lake New York might be a good back-up plan. Lake Ontario shares its northern border with Canada and its southern border with New York. The name change to Lake New York would be a natural for Trump, who is a native of the Empire State.
Ontario is at the center of Trump's trade dispute with Canada. The province is the top trading partner of 17 U.S. states. Ontario has launched an advertising campaign promoting its long-standing ties with the United States. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has been outspoken about his opposition to any tariffs Trump may impose on Canada.
Trump could follow suit on his push to rename Denali back to Mount McKinley. Utqiagvik was formerly known as Barrow, Alaska, until residents there approved a name change to its native Inuit name in 2016. The city is the northernmost in the United States and lies near Point Barrow, which is the northernmost point in the country. A post office with the name Barrow (because so many people had misspelled its original name) opened in 1901.
NASA changed its name for the remains of dying star and its related comets and gasses from “Eskimo Nebula” to “NGC 2392” in 2020. That could be an easier swap because of the federal government’s control over the space agency.
Other geographic items might also find themselves undergoing a name change. Given Trump’s proclivity for hyperbole, the name “Grand Canyon” might not be enough. Perhaps only the “Grandest Canyon Ever” will do. Why not have the “Freedom River” flow through the Nation’s Capital? Sorry, Kevin Costner, but Yellowstone National Park might not stand when “Red, White, and Blue Stone” is on the table.
A swap of the Washington Commanders would be a much tougher sell. They were originally founded as the Boston Braves in 1932. The name was changed to the Redskins a year later because of confusion with the National League baseball team in Boston at the time, which now plays in Atlanta. The Boston Redskins moved to Washington in 1937. Of course, any NFL name change would have to be approved by the league itself. But that might not stop Trump from at least lobbying for it.
