ACC Football 2025 Team-By-Team Miles Traveled: Belichick Stays Close To Home At UNC

Bill Belichick’s debut as head coach at North Carolina headlines Year 2 of the new-look Atlantic Coast Conference. Fortunately for "The Hoodie," Jordon Hudson, and the Heels, travel won’t be a major obstacle.

North Carolina plays six road games in 2025 but leaves the state only three times, traveling a total of just 7,213.86 miles — well below the ACC average of 8013.46 miles. The Heels venture outside the Eastern Time Zone only once, for an Oct. 17 game at California. The average road trip in the ACC this year will be 1,449.07 miles and cover 1.19 time zones. 

Three of UNC's “road” games are in-state matchups: at Charlotte, Wake Forest, and a short 39.58-mile round trip to NC State. The annual rivalry game vs. Duke — the shortest trip in the Power Five at just 17.04 miles — is at home this season. For comparison, the UCLA-USC Big Ten clash spans 25.58 miles.

Stanford Tops ACC Travel Chart, Hokies Stay Close to Home

Stanford racks up the most travel in the ACC by far — more than double the mileage of any other team. The Cardinal opens the season at Hawai’i and will log 23,503.21 miles, with cross-country trips to Virginia, Miami, and UNC on the slate.

On the other end, Virginia Tech travels just 2,855 miles — one of three ACC teams (along with Clemson and NC State) that never leaves the Eastern Time Zone. For Clemson, it’s the second straight year without crossing a time zone.

The longest road trip in the ACC this season has Stanford visiting Miami at Hard Rock Stadium - a 5,126.28-mile round trip. 

Clemson, the +160 favorite to win the ACC Championship according to DraftKings, travels 3,139.58 miles in total. Its longest trip? A 1,645.56-mile round trip to Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The expanded ACC football schedule protects 16 annual matchups. That includes 13 which have become staples on the ACC calendar for those schools who have been with the conference since its founding in 1953 or subsequently joined before this season. Three others were added featuring Cal, Stanford, and SMU. 

The shortest road trip in the ACC remains the same – the 17.04-mile back-and-forth journey between the football stadiums between Duke and North Carolina. This year, North Carolina plays host in the intrastate rivalry. NC State visits Duke this season, making the 36.62-mile round trip. And the road team in the North Carolina – NC State game makes a 40.04-mile journey back and forth. This year, the game will be at North Carolina State on Nov. 29.
