The golf betting scene is rapidly evolving, with more legal markets and more ways to wager and watch every month. While the Masters and other major championships are the biggest draw, The Match is now entering its fifth installment as an alternative golf betting experience.

What began as a one-time deal in The Match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas in 2018 has since taken on a variety of team formats and non-pro participants. Now it’s back to the one-on-one format with major champions Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka playing a 12-hole match at 4 p.m. Friday at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas.

DeChambeau is holding strong as a -125 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, while Koepka is a +105 underdog. This will be Koepka’s first time playing in The Match format – DeChambeau teamed up with former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to defeat Phil Mickelson and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady during The Match IV back in July.

In addition to moneyline, betting sites are offering several prop wagers and hole-by-hole winners. There will also be live wagering opportunities at sportsbooks once the match tees off.

Koepka to Win

The Odds: +105 at DraftKings

There’s been so much talk of DeChambeau’s motivation going into this one. He’s been the little brother getting picked on throughout this “feud,” and bettors seem confident he’ll punch back in Las Vegas. We’re not so sure.

For one, this is golf. Motivation plays a factor but it can also work against you. We know how bad DeChambeau wants this one. He might want it so much that he gets in his own head early on. He also hasn’t played a tournament since the Ryder Cup and spent a lot of time practicing for his stint in the World Long Drive. Who knows how that jives with his actual tournament swing.

Koepka has missed two cuts in a row, but at least he’s been getting reps with four starts under his belt already this season. And his stony demeanor will probably help in this type of format. This is only a 12-hole match, and both players are world class. Koepka has also been the better match play guy, with a 10-7-2 singles record as a pro. DeChambeau is just 3-5-1.

We like Koepka to pull off the upset at +105.

DeChambeau To Win More Par-3 Holes

The Odds: -120 at PointsBet

While the Wynn Golf Club features six par-3s, Koepka and DeChambeau aren’t playing the full layout in this 12-hole match. They’ll only play three of the par-3s, and we like DeChambeau’s chances.

DeChambeau’s driver gets all the attention, but he’s not bad with the irons either. Looking at par-4 and par-5 scoring average, these two players are very similar. But DeChambeau has the edge on the shorter holes and has finished with a lower scoring average on par-3s than Koepka in three consecutive seasons.

Koepka has struggled with the irons a bit early this season, so we’ll go with DeChambeau to get the upper-hand on the par 3s at -120 golf odds.

Hole No. 2 Winner - Koepka

The Odds: +290 at PointsBet

The Wynn’s Par-5 third hole will be played as the second hole for The Match V layout, and it’s the shortest par-5 on property. That’ll mitigate DeChambeau’s distance advantage a bit, though Koepka hits it plenty far himself.

The approach will be critical here with water and trouble on the right side of the fairway all the way up and around the green. We could definitely see someone find trouble here, so we like the odds of either player winning it instead of a tie.

Koepka still averages 315 yards off the tee and can let it rip here. He’ll also have had time to settle in a bit if there are any nerves on the first tee for his Match debut. We like Koepka to win the second hole with +290 odds.

Koepka vs DeChambeau Have History

Much like the Woods-Mickelson matchup, this one is rooted in what was once seemingly-legitimate bad blood.

It all started in January 2019, when Koepka criticized DeChambeau for slow play, an issue that had been receiving a lot of attention at the time. Later that month, DeChambeau confronted Koepka’s caddie before a round to say he didn’t appreciate it.

The two have since traded words and tweets and a Ryder Cup team room, and what once felt like a legitimate feud is now a lukewarm relationship at best. The two embraced after Team USA’s win over Europe at Whistling Straits and seem to be on fine terms.

We expect a reboot of faux-hostility in the coming weeks, but that’s just how it goes. The atmosphere at these events is always loose and jocular, with the quality of the event almost entirely dependent on the quality of golf being played.

A Competitive ‘Match’ At Last?

In that sense, this could be the most competitive installment of The Match to date. Unlike past variations that have included crossover athletes like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Steph Curry, we’ve got two big names going head-to-head in their prime.

DeChambeau is currently seventh in the world and Koepka is 16th. They’re both U.S. Open champions coming off a huge team win at the Ryder Cup. It’s also taking place at a swanky course most have never seen on TV with the Wynn Golf Club. While the pacing and broadcast content didn’t seem all that viewer-friendly for the Woods-Mickelson match, additional tweaks and cameras and microphones have since led to an enjoyable, casual watch for those at home.

There’s been plenty of cynicism surrounding the Koepka-DeChambeau match. We get it. Nobody likes a manufactured, made-for-TV “feud.” But when you forget about the publicity blitz and just focus on the golf gambling aspect, this will be the most legitimate Match yet.

With a pair of top-10 major winners, plenty of gambling opportunities and a prime TV spot the day after Thanksgiving, The Koepka-DeChambeau Match is definitely worth a watch and a few betting slips.
