Novak Djokovic vs Karen Khachanov

Novak Djokovic breezes into his 17th quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros – a record-setting feat that not even the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, can claim. He’s faced little resistance on his run this year, earning his place in the last eight without dropping a set or so much of a sweat.

By contrast, Karen Khachanov labors into the quarterfinals. He was taken the distance in his tournament opener and then he twice needed four sets to take the win, including a come-from-behind win against Lorenzo Sonego in the R16, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-1.

As good as Khachanov is, Djokovic is miles better. They don’t play in the same stratosphere. Khachanov is going to give it his best, of course. He has nothing to lose after all. But to beat the 22-time Grand Slam champion, he’ll have to tap into another worldly level. Do you really see that happening?

Put it another way: Does anyone really want that to happen? Since the draw first came out, the potential of a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz semi-final sent tennis fans into a tizzy. Now, with both players just one win away from setting up the matchup that we’ve all been hankering after, frankly crashing the party is not on.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Stefanos Tsitsipas

The second men’s quarterfinal on the day’s tennis-betting card promises to be an absorbing face-off between Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, both of whom have a legitimate shot to win the coveted title. Though Alcaraz is baked-in as the player to beat, now on +110 in Bet365 French Open outrights ahead of the final eight.

Alcaraz, who enjoyed his maiden Grand Slam breakthrough at the 2022 US Open, is looking to win his second major title. So far, he’s looked nigh invincible in Paris.

He’s dropped just one set through four matches and comes off a comprehensive dismantling of Lorenzo Musetti, who was supposed to be his first real test of the tournament in the R16. So much for that. Alcaraz quickly put paid on that notion in the 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Tsitsipas, a French Open finalist in 2021, is something of a “forgotten man” in tennis. Overshadowed by the rise of youngsters such as Alcaraz and Rune, he seemed to have an anecdotal role in the tournament’s narrative. And yet. he’s quietly gone about his business and advances into the quarterfinals dropping just  one set in four matches.

For Tsitsipas to book his place in the final four, he would have to do something he’s never done before. Beat Alcaraz. Tsitsipas has come up on the wrong side of their four previous meetings, including a five-set epic at the 2021 US Open. He’s failed against him on his beloved clay even – and as recently as this year’s Barcelona Open final, which Alcaraz won 6-3, 6-4.

Given the stakes on the line, Tsitsipas is sure to throw the kitchen sink at Alcaraz. But it’s hard to see the outcome going any other way than of the Spaniard.

French Open Best Bet: Alcaraz in four sets

Karolina Muchova vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

Karolina Muchova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are accomplished players with talent and quality that belies their current lower rankings.

They might not be the feature matchup of the women’s quarterfinals on Tuesday – that nod goes to what should be an intense duel between in-form Sabalenka and a resurgent Svitolina – but they should deliver a right cracker nevertheless.

Pavlyuchenkova is a former French Open finalist, reaching the ultimate round in 2021 where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova.

The veteran has powered her way through the draw, coming from a set down in each of her last three matches to win in three.

Muchova began her tournament by delivering one of the biggest upsets on the women’s side. She defeated fifth seed Maria Sakkari and hasn’t looked back since, dropping just one set along the way.

The lines are fine between Pavlyuchenkova and Muchova in terms of the betting, though the Czech emerges as the slight favorite. However, if this match goes the distance – as many expect it to – then the winner is a total tossup.

French Open Best Bet: Muchova to win

Aryna Sabalenka vs Elina Svitolina

A politically-charged backstory might be dominating the narrative surrounding the clash between Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka in the French Open quarterfinals. But the bottom line: it’s a tennis match between two supremely talented players.

Svitolina is enjoying a renaissance since returning to tournament play from mat leave. She picked up her first in over two years in Strasbourg, a French Open warm-up event. And she’s backed that title-winning run by reaching the quarterfinals in Paris.

Aryna Sabalenka booked her place in the last eight with a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Sloane Stephens. According to the match statisticians, the Belarussian power player was hitting bigger forehands than Alcaraz was on the same day in his match against Musetti.

Svitolina’s finesse and counter-punching style is outmatched by Sabalenka’s firepower from the baseline. The Ukrainian will be motivated to win this match for a number of reasons, and the French crowd is sure to be behind Mrs. Monfils. But a win is a big ask unless the pressure of the occasion and the opponent somehow get to Sabalenka.

French Open Best Bet: Sabalenka -5.5
