The third round of the French Open gets underway on Friday with a veritable buffet of fascinating matchups in the men’s and women’s field of play. 

Some of the best to spot on the day’s tennis-betting card include tournament favorites, such as Carlos Alcaraz vs Denis Shapovalov, Novak Djokovic vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Aryna Sabalenka vs Kamilla Rakhimova and Jessica Pegula vs Elise Mertens, to name a few.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Diego SchwartzmanGreece’s No. 1 Stefanos Tsitsipas flew under the radar in Paris, overlooked initially by the usual suspects and an emergent crop of next-generation players, spearheaded by World No. 1 Alcaraz. 

But as the upset bug continues to ravage the men’s draw, Tsitsipas finds himself steadily climbing the tennis odds board in proportion. He’s now up to +1400 to lift the coveted Coupe de Mousquetaires – the fourth best-bet after Alcaraz, Djokovic and Holger Rune.

Tsitsipas received a stern test from Jiri Vesely in the first round. He then breezed through his R64 match against Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets. Next up is veteran and clay aficionado Diego Schwartzman, a diminutive Argentine that packs a punch that belies his size. 

Schwartzman did well to overcome his opponents in the first two rounds, even rallying from two sets down in the R128. However, besting Tsitsipas is going to be a big ask.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Denis Shapovalov

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov is enjoying his first winning streak since he reached the R32 of the Australian Open in January. Since then, it’s been five-month slog for him and he arrived in Paris boasting a subpar 7-9 record on the season. 

Few would have expected Shapovalov to find form on his least favorite surface (clay). But he has. Go figure. Unfortunately, his reward (if it can be called that at all) is a date with the World No. 1 and oddsmakers’ favorite to win the title, Alcaraz. 

Shapovalov’s game is explosive and he has a solid arsenal of shots.  It wouldn’t be surprising if he does match up well to Alcaraz in what is their first-ever meeting. However, he’s also unpredictable, sometimes erratic in his shot selection, and temperamental. So, even if he were to go toe-to-toe with Alcaraz for the better part of five sets, the balance would still tip in Alcaraz’s favor.

Novak Djokovic vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina stunned Djokovic in their last meeting, beating the Serbian 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in the R32 of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. But few expect he could do it again. Or could he?

Beating a legend such as Djokovic is one of those life-defining moments of in a player’s career, a box only the privileged few ever get to tick and something to cherish forever. 

Taking the measure of Djokovic once is an impressive feat. To do it twice in a row is almost unthinkable.  Then again, Djokovic arrived in Paris on suspect form by his lofty standards. Then, there is the upset bug which is wreaking havoc in the men’s draw, claiming early casualties in Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner. It’s a longshot bet, but, perhaps, worth a small flutter.

Elise Mertens vs Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula is favored to win this match despite having never beaten Elise Mertens. The American is 0-2 lifetime, having lost to Mertens in Cincinnati (2020) and Dubai (2021). 

Pegula’s favoritism stems from her impressive form. At 28 years of age, she’s become one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour, playing some of the best tennis of her career. Especially on clay, a surface that suits her as a counter-puncher. 

Mertens is pretty adept on clay as well, however. That fact, coupled with her record against Pegula, makes this a total tossup for tennis picks. 

French Open Best Bet: Mertens in three

Kamilla Rakhimova vs Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka is through to the R32 without dropping a set. She took out Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-2 and then qualifier Iryna Shymanovich 7-5,  6-2. 

Next up is 21-year-old Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, who took advantage of a soft section of the draw to advance without dropping a set to qualifier Sara Bejlek and No. 88 Magdalena French. 

On paper, this is a total mismatch. Sabalenka should win and do so comfortably.
