“Guinness is good for you,” proclaimed the classic advert for Ireland’s favourite drink and you have to wonder if it isn’t Jon Rahm’s secret weapon.

With his second win in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open on Sunday the Spaniard has seen his odds for next week’s Open Championship drop from 20/1 (+2000) to 14/1 (+1400), a move that reflects his undoubted strengths, but which has seen a shift in the golf betting odds.

Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy are both now pushed out to 15/2 (+750) and 8/1 (+800) respectively, with Dustin Johnson 14/1 (+1400) and Tiger Woods 16/1 (+1600).

For Rahm the theory is straightforward: he’s dynamite on the Irish links. He’s played the Irish Open three times, winning at Portstewart in 2017, repeating that at Lahinch last week, and he was fourth at Ballyliffin in-between.

But delve deeper and his quality shines through ever more brightly.

In his six weekend rounds at the Irish Open he is a combined 37-under par and has never needed more than 67 blows to complete a circuit.

Last Sunday he began the day five swings back of the lead in a tie for ninth and when he sniffed his chance on the back-nine he took it in style.

His driving was long, his approach shots were ambitious, his execution was excellent and his putting fearless.

If he initially played the final hole a little recklessly what was also apparent was that he kept his hot head in check, found a way to make par and secured the title.

Rahm's Temper Has Cooled

Don’t underestimate the potential of Rahm playing with his temper under control. It has been his Achilles Heel in the past, but he has worked on it.

He has also become a more accomplished major championship performer. The 24-year-old failed to make the top 20 in his first six major starts and he now has four top tens in his last seven.

A return to Portrush will also allow him to return to the Harbour Bistro, where he ate every night during his Irish Open victory two years ago. Golfers are creatures of habit and thrive on good vibes – it’s little wonder Rahm is smiling and punters are taking note.

This week Rory McIlroy will play the Scottish Open, providing some clues as to the state of his game ahead of what will be an emotional week in front of home crowds.

Whilst Tiger Woods is expected to play golf around the Irish coast, quietly honing his game, aware that links golf calls for experience and it offers his best chance of major success since Augusta in April.
