U.S. President Joe Biden has announced he won’t run for re-election, the first president since Lyndon Johnson in 1968 to not seek a second term.

He has endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to lead the Democratic ticket in the November presidential election. While Harris isn’t confirmed until the Democratic National Convention in August, she is considered the strong favorite to get the bid.

Who will run alongside Harris as her running mate? Names are popping up quickly since Biden’s sudden announcement.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has surveyed the landscape and created odds as to who Harris’ VP pick will be.

Harris hasn’t earned a bid to face Trump just yet – she’ll need to win the support of the delegates before the Democratic National Convention in August. But she’s the favorite to secure it.

Picking the right running mate can help her chances. Presidential nominees often pander to voters by choosing a VP from a specific demographic or battleground state that can directly help win a few more electoral votes. Harris is widely expected to go this route. All but one of the leading candidates are white males.

Kentucky governor Andy Beshear has won two elections in a typically red state thanks to a more moderate viewpoint and pro-business stance that has impressed both sides of the aisle.

Similarly, North Carolina governor Roy Cooper has won two election bids in the same years that Trump won the state’s presidential elections, highlighting his popularity despite party affiliation. He’s hosted either Biden or Harris 11 times in 2024 already, a clear sign of his loyalty to the leaders.

Cooper is term-limited, so his reign as governor ends in January. He is more in line with Harris’ viewpoints and is popular in his swing state, possibly checking more boxes than anyone else.

Arizona senator Mark Kelly has made a name for himself as a rising star since being elected in 2020. The same goes for Maryland governor Wes Moore, who has been a trusted Biden insider but isn’t as well-known on the national circuit.

Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro has held his spot for less than two years and doesn’t have the star power or name recognition, but he’s from a battleground state and has been lauded for his handling of key moments, including the Trump assassination attempt in his state.

Pete Buttigieg ran for president in 2020 then was named Transportation Secretary by Biden. The former South Bend, Ind. mayor has higher aspirations, but headline-making issues with airlines and train derailments on his watch could offer criticism.

California governor Gavin Newsom was considered a prime presidential candidate when it was believed Biden wouldn’t get to November as the candidate. Would he be interested in a running-mate spot with Harris? Not likely. He’s also from a state already guaranteed to vote blue.

Illinois governor and Hyatt Hotels billionaire J.B. Pritzker was a staunch supporter of Biden and has already pledged loyalty to Harris, though, like Newsom, he leads a state that’s very likely to vote blue already.

Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer has stated she’s not interested in a VP role. But politicians are often easily persuaded to go the way of the wind. She leads the Field of potential running mates not listed.
