With Mike McCarthy’s future on Dallas on life-support, Bill Belichick has emerged as the most-favored candidate to become the next Cowboys head coach. 

The Cowboys were crushed by the Packers 48-32 in their NFL Divisional playoff game Sunday. The Packers now have more playoff wins at Jerry World (3) than the Cowboys (2). 

“Throughout this season, sources believed Cowboys’ HC Mike McCarthy always would be judged by how Dallas’ last game of the season went,” Adam Schefter posted on X Sunday night. 

Before the end of the first half Sunday, social media was aflame with commentary and speculation that Belichick would be coaching the Cowboys this upcoming season. Belichick coached in New England for 24 years before he and the Patriots “mutually parted ways” last week. 

Belichick and the Patriots won 6 Super Bowl rings during his time as HC of the NEP. The Patriots, however, have not won a playoff game since Super Bowl 53. They finished 4-13 this past season, as dysfunction reigned on and off the field. 

As of Monday morning, there was no scheduled press availability for McCarthy, another sign that his time in Dallas may be over.

The Cowboys continued their run of playoff ineptitude Sunday. The Packers led 27-0 before Dallas finally scored on the final play of the first half. 

After the loss, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was almost at a loss for words. 

“What I’m zeroed in on is the fact that I thought we were in position — everyone in this room thought we were in a position — to advance this thing in the playoffs and maybe [go] as far as our dreams might take us. We didn’t do it. … This is one of my [biggest] surprises since I’ve been involved in sport, period," he said via Yahoo Sports. 

“On a personal basis, I’m floored,” added. “Not that there’s any world’s smallest violin for me being floored. I get that. I understand that. I know where the responsibility starts and ends. I’ve got that real clear.”

Belichick – a maniacal control freak – might feel like an odd fit in Dallas. But he has developed a close relationship with the Jones family. And Jones and Patriots owner Robert Kraft are long-time rivals. Belichick moving to Big D would be a nice dig at his former boss.
