WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational Odds, Betting Predictions & Picks

Dan Kilbridge | 20 mins

It’s playoff time on the PGA Tour. The standings have been reduced to the top 125 players, with three more tournaments set to decide this year’s season-long winner and the $18 million prize that comes with.
It all gets underway this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, after which the top 70 players remaining will advance to the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. The field will then be reduced to just 30 players for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta Aug. 25-28.
All the A-listers are here to start us off at TPC Southwind, where Rory McIlroy is the golf betting favorite at +900 in what will be his first start since a solo third at the British Open.
While McIlroy tops the board, a group of five players including Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Matthew Fitzpatrick are second with +1400 golf odds to start the week.
British Open winner Cameron Smith is next at +1800 on betting apps, just ahead of Jon Rahm and Tony Finau at +2000 – Finau is coming off back-to-back wins at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and Wyndham Championship, while Rahm is looking to end the year on a high note after failing to finish top-10 in any major this season.

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship Picks & Predictions
Shane Lowry Top-10 Finish
Odds: +330 at DraftKings ➜
Lowry probably isn’t a high priority for most bettors this week after a T-83 at the Wyndham Championship. But it wasn’t as bad as the finish suggests. Lowry actually hit his irons great, finishing seventh in Strokes Gained Approach.
The problem was he had his worst four-round putting performance since the 2018 DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Overall, Lowry’s putting has been much improved this year and we expect a bounce-back performance in Memphis.
Lowry has more than enough distance to get it around any course, but he’s more accurate than most with the driver and has one of the best approach games on Tour. TPC Southwind looks like a great fight on paper and he’s been T-30 or better in three prior starts, including a T-6 in 2020. Granted those were limited-field WGC events, but he’s been consistent with 11 of 12 rounds at even par or better.
The Irishman is currently No. 29 in the FedEx Cup standings and on pace to make the Tour Championship for the first time in his career. That’s more than enough motivation for Lowry to keep it up and move one step closer to Atlanta with a strong showing in Memphis.
We’re on Lowry top-10 finish with +330 odds at DraftKings.

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship Betting Tips
While not the most visually stunning course on Tour, TPC Southwind provides a tough test with plenty of potential trouble. It almost always leads to an A-list champion, with past winners including Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau and Jason Day. While several of those players have since departed for LIV Golf, there’s plenty of remaining talent to choose from on top of the board on betting sites.
One of the big stats this week is bogey avoidance – this course has seen 5,989 golf balls find the water in competition since 2003 – most of any course on Tour by more than 1,000 shots. That’s one of the reasons we like Lowry, as he ranks sixth on Tour with a 13.11% bogey percentage.

It’s imperative to find the fairway this week and avoid the big number. While we’ve seen big hitters like Johnson win here, they got it done with standout irons play – another big key this week. Only pure ballstrikers have been able to get it done here in recent years, and it’s not the time to play bomb and gouge.
Overall, we’re looking at elite irons players who find the fairway more often than not and don’t let the squares add up on the scorecards.
