After the excitement of the 2016 Cheltenham Festival, we now have the marvellous Aintree meeting to enjoy and the jewel of the crown is clearly the Crabbie’s Grand National.

The Grand National takes place on Saturday 9 April and we’re getting closer to discovering the forty runners that will take their place for the world’s most famous steeplechase.

One horse that will run barring any injury is THE DRUID’S NEPHEW who is currently sixteenth in the weights and is set to carry 11-0 for this four-mile and two-furlong encounter.

Neil Mulholland was delighted with his charge in the recent Grimthorpe Stakes where the nine-year-old ran a blinder to finish second behind The Last Samuri, with The Druid’s Nephew having participated in the 2015 Grand National.

On that occasion, the horse hit the front with five obstacles remaining only to come a cropper, although the handicapper clearly regards the runner in high esteem and has raised the weights significantly for this run.

Trainer Mulholland believes that the horse is better a year down the line and will improve greatly for having that run in the Grimthorpe Stakes.

He said: “It was a beautiful run. I was delighted with him and he has come out of the race bouncing. He would have preferred better ground than the soft he got yesterday, and given that was his first run for a while, it was a tremendous performance.

“He will certainly improve for the run and on better ground. He will go straight to the National.”

Many Clouds is set to go off favourite for this race and last year’s winner has been treated favourably by the handicapper, with just a 1lb rise on the 2015 race which means he’s trading as short as 8/1.

Indeed, this Grand National will feature more top class horses than ever before, with Holywell, Silviniaco Conti and Don Poli also set to line up for a race which should capture the imagination like never before.
