A field of 12 have been declared for this afternoon’s 2m handicap chase at Ayr (due off 4.05pm) and it’s safe to say the majority have questions to answer.

Willie Hall has been in good form of late, winning back-to-back races here in January, but the 12-year-old looked in the grip of the handicapper when failing to land the hat-trick at Newcastle last time. He is still respected of course and so is Irish raider Finea, who needed all of Jack Kennedy’s strength in the saddle when getting home at Down Royal earlier this month and is now 7lb higher in the weights. Bottom weight Clan Chief is another to consider, though he’s failed to complete in two chase starts.

But this looks a decent opportunity for Martin Todhunter’s BONZO BING to break his duck over fences at the eighth attempt. He has generally struggled since coming over from Ireland, where he won twice, but has come down the weights as a result and ran his best race yet when second behind a gambled on winner over 2m4f at Newcastle last time off the same mark as today’s. A repeat of that effort would see him go very close and the drop back in trip might help him too as both his hurdle wins came over two miles.
