Roy Hodgson is likely to be unveiled as the new manager of Crystal Palace this week and perhaps the 70-year-old will enjoy something called the “bounce factor”.

This is when a new manager takes over and the team suddenly enjoy an upturn in performance and results, with Hodgson not exactly having to reinvent the wheel at Selhurst Park.

Sunday’s display at Turf Moor was worthy of the three points, with a defensive lapse allowing Chris Wood to score the only goal of the game, while Scott Dann should really have converted his header from close range.

Hodgson will hope that home advantage against a fairly weak Southampton side can help the Eagles enjoy three precious points, with Wilfried Zaha the notable absentee on the sidelines.

Reuben Loftus-Cheek could return and put in a strong performance, with the on-loan midfielder having looked bright in recent matches, while Christian Benteke can be a handful for a Southampton defence who conceded twice at home to Watford last week.

Indeed, Mauricio Pellegrino could be the next top flight manager heading for the chop after the Saints’ fairly drab start to the season. They have beaten West Ham albeit unconvincingly, with the reverse against the Hornets their worst display of the campaign.

Manuel Pellegrini is looking starved of service and the natives are getting restless at St Mary’s. We certainly can’t fathom why Palace are the outsiders to win this clash.
