Gary Rowett didn’t hang about after Derby lost their Championship play-off semi-final against Fulham last season, with the 44-year-old receiving an attractive offer from Stoke City.

County owner Mel Morris received a spate of applications for the vacant position and went for an inexperienced option in the form of Frank Lampard, with nobody exactly certain as to how the rookie manager will fare in a competitive division.

It appears that Lampard will play a 4-3-3 formation and Martyn Waghorn looks set to form part of the attacking trident along with Matej Vydra and potentially Tom Lawrence. It is clear that funds are available for a club whose target will be a place in the top six.

It was Reading who managed to land a play-off spot two seasons ago under Jaap Stam and they came close to achieving promotion, although the Royals regressed last term and came dangerously close to losing their Championship status.

Paul Clement has the reins and his reputation has been tarnished by unconvincing spells at Derby and Swansea, with the former Real Madrid assistant coach having his hands tied when it comes to making quality new signings.

Liam Moore is a quality central defender and it was noticeable that Marc McNulty scored a hatful of goals in League Two last season although this is a different level entirely and there’s the prospect of a relegation dogfight at the Mad Stad this season.

It’s hard to read too much into the pre-season performances and results of both teams and there’s little data to feed off initially, with Derby drawing their opening game at Sunderland last season in a similar type of game.

Lampard would be happy enough to get a point on the board and find out about his players during this match, while it would also be a satisfactory outcome for a Reading side who will be looking to hoard points ahead of a potentially difficult winter.
