Both sides know that defeat in Monday’s Group E clash would mean an uphill struggle considering that Belgium and Italy lie in wait.

The Republic of Ireland and Sweden simply don’t have the quality compared to these other teams and it’s therefore vital that they manage at least a point from the clash at the Stade de France.

Martin O’Neill’s gameplan will be simple. Be organised, be strong in the tackle and look to get that all-important goal from a set piece or counter-attack.

There is a blueprint for Ireland to follow considering they beat Germany at the Aviva Stadium thanks to a Shane Long winner, while they overcame Bosnia in the play-offs to get to France.

Long will continue to lead the line against the Swedes, with Jonathan Walters, Wes Hoolahan and Jeff Hendrick likely to support him in attack, although the key players will be James McCarthy and Glen Whelan sitting in front of the defence.

Sweden are all about one player. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a devastating forward although he doesn’t have anything like the supporting cast of players that is enjoyed at Paris Saint-Germain.

Most football fans would struggle to name another Swedish player although the veteran midfielder Kim Kallstrom continues to operate for his country in central midfield, with the Swedes narrowly overcoming Denmark in the play-offs.

However, the defence is not particularly robust and this game could play into the hands of a Republic side who can enjoy a slender 1-0 win to get their Euro 2016 campaign off to the perfect start.
