Since drawing 1-1 against Sunderland, the Saints appear to have gotten their act together. They played very well when losing 2-1 at Arsenal before embarking on a four-match winning run and then two goalless draws away to Beer Sheva and Leicester.

Which brings us to the present moment and the bookies make Southampton 2/5 to beat Burnley on Sunday, which seems a little on the short side. After all, Claude Puel’s side could only draw 1-1 with Watford and Sunderland before dominating Swansea but only winning 1-0.

Burnley have played twice on the road and been soundly beaten both times. 3-0 to be precise, with Chelsea and Leicester filling their boots. However, if Sean Dyche can start channelling that team spirit which has seen them beat Liverpool and Watford, then perhaps the Lancashire side stand half a chance.

Indeed, there was more than a touch of hard luck about their 1-0 defeat against Arsenal a fortnight ago, with Jeff Hendrick and Johann Berg Gudmundsson adding some steel to a Burnley side who enjoyed the Championship title last season.

Dyche will be quietly confident of frustrating opponents that feature former Clarets Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriguez, with Michael Keane marshalling the visitors’ defence after a recent call-up for England.

Even if Southampton win, it might only be a slender margin of victory and we’re happy to get with the visitors on the handicap market. The Saints shouldn’t be so short to win this game of football.
