On Saturday night, Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal will try to earn themselves a title shot when they face each other in a feature bout at UFC 239. UFC betting oddsmakers believe Askren will be the man to get it done, with 888Sport installing him as a -240 favorite to Masvidal’s +188 odds and in this instance, they are most likely correct.

Askren is an Olympic wrestler who turned to MMA and had tremendous success outside of the UFC, winning belts everywhere he went and staying unbeaten as a pro. He has done that with a limited, but highly effective, game centered entirely around his ability to take opponents down. He has yet to find someone who can stuff his takedowns; the day he does is the day he will lose, but Masvidal is not that guy.

Jorge Masvidal Vs. Ben Askren Odds, Tips for UFC 239

Bet Ben Askren to Beat Jorge Masvidal By Decision at UFC 239 1
Jorge Masvidal has a strong skill set but he will need to avoid being taken down on Saturday.

Masvidal is among the most underrated fighters in MMA today, with elite skills everywhere, but he’s small for a welterweight and his low-output style matches up poorly against Askren, especially since his chain wrestling defense is one of the few weak points in his game.

Masvidal is crafty so he still has a chance to win against a one-dimensional fighter like Askren but the straight odds are spot on here. The prop odds have great opportunity though.

Against all of his toughest opponents (except the controversial fight with Robbie Lawler) Askren has been a decision machine. His wrestling and grappling is outstanding but he doesn’t bring much power in his ground and pound. Conversely, Masvidal has proven to be almost impossible to stop, and fought grappling wizard Demian Maia to a standstill already.

BetFair in the UK and Resorts in America have Askren by Decision at +110 and, as that is by far the most likely result on Saturday, that is my best bet for the fight.
