After back-to-back weeks of UFC PPVs, this weekend things slow down a bit with a much more traditional Fight Night card taking place back at the home base of Las Vegas, NV.

In the main event, UFC betting fans are in for a treat as former featherweight champion Max Holloway attempts to make his case for a third crack at current champion Alexander Volkanovski when he faces third-ranked Yair Rodriguez in a matchup that figures to be one of the most exciting bouts of the year, so let’s get to it.

Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodriguez Betting Analysis

Yair Rodriguez is an interesting case as far as top-ranked UFC fighters go. Entering the organization in 2014 by winning The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, Rodriguez was quickly tapped as a future star and delivered early on, beating some excellent fighters and showcasing a flashy, fan-friendly style and recording one of the greatest knockouts of all-time with his last-minute Hail Mary back/up elbow against The Korean Zombie.

The big difficulty for Rodriguez though, has been activity. Due to a combination of injury and administrative troubles, when he steps into the cage on Saturday, it will be the first time Rodriguez has competed in over two years, and he’s getting about as tough a matchup as possible.

Max Holloway is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA and though he has been competing in the UFC for nearly a decade, at 29 years old he still is only just now hitting his prime as a fighter.

Stylistically, Holloway is all about volume, volume, volume. A rangy featherweight with a seemingly endless gas tank, Holloway’s game is like a force of nature, a relentless pitter-patter of punches that builds up until suddenly, his opponent is drowning in flood waters.

In his last fight, he landed 445 significant strikes against Calvin Katter - that’s nearly as many strikes as the the rest of the fighters on UFC Vegas 42 landed combined in their respective bouts. That should sum up exactly how daunting the task is ahead of Rodriguez.

Holloway vs. Rodriguez Best Bet

For as fun as this fight looks on paper, I expect this fight to actually be thoroughly one-sided. Rodriguez is an exciting, flashy fighter when he is given the space and time to fire off his acrobatic attacks but Holloway is peerless when it comes to denying space and time.

There is no-one in MMA who works at a higher pace and I fully expect Holloway to overwhelm Rodriguez with his volume. Holloway by KO/TKO at +140 on FanDuel is the play.

Other UFC Fight Night Bets To Consider

Ben Rothwell vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima: In the co-main event, heavyweight stalwart Ben Rothwell takes on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil competitor Marcos Rogerio de Lima. The way to beat Rothwell is to outwork his awkward, herky-jerky style on the feet and that’s not de Lima’s game. De Lima is a big-hitting heavyweight who likes to score takedowns and work from the top but given that Rothwell is an excellent defensive wrestler and extremely durable, I expect that won’t do too well for him. Rothwell at -158 on FanDuel is the bet.

Cynthia Calvillo vs. Andrea Lee: On the prelim card, arguably the best fight of the night takes place when fifth-ranked flyweight Cynthia Calvillo takes on 12th-ranked flyweight Andrea Lee. Both Lee and Calvillo can do a bit of everything but Calvillo is a super grappler and likely the superior athlete as well. Given Lee’s struggles off her back in previous fights, if Calvillo can secure takedowns, she should win handily. The best bet is Calvillo at -118 on FOX Bet.
