Former world champions Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia reportedly agreed to a somewhat surprising welterweight showdown scheduled for sometime later this year on pay-per-view, and oddsmakers don’t really know what to do with it.

According to the best bookmakers, Garcia vs. Garcia is dead-even on the early betting market. Both London-based oddsmaker Ladbrokes and Dublin-based bookmaker Paddypower, perennial powers in offering early boxing betting action on big fights, offer both fighters at -110.

This is the kind of thing hardly even happens in boxing, a rare even-money fight promotion featuring two fighters who could easily take less risky fights for themselves based on name-recognition alone but choose to fight each other anyway.

According to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger, the proposed bout could take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles sometime in October but those details haven’t really been sorted out yet.

Why Garcia-Garcia Makes Sense

Both Mikey Garcia and Danny Garcia are stalwart boxing stars, but both struggled to maintain their elite status, at least in terms of divisional relevancy, after they moved up to compete at the 147-pound welterweight limit.

While fighters already as accomplished as these two usually opt for taking the long way around after suffering a setback, the quickest way for either to get back up on top of the 147-pound contender heap is by taking on a legitimate challenge.

A win by either over the other would be real evidence that the winner deserves a shot at one of the current 147-pound titleholders Errol Spence Jr. (IBF), Keith Thurman (WBA), Shawn Porter (WBC) or Terence Crawford (WBO).

Mikey Garcia Hopes to Rebound from Huge Loss

Mikey has only competed once at welterweight, but he lost virtually every round when he challenged IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence earlier this year on the first ever PBC on Fox PPV.

Even though Spence was a significant favorite in the fight, hardly anyone expected Mikey to be so thoroughly outclassed in the fight. After all, Garcia, 31, from Oxnard, Calf., was undefeated headed into the bout and had won world titles in four different weight classes.

It was generally assumed that Spence was the bigger, stronger fighter but that Mikey was at least the slightly more skilled one. But that prefight analysis was completely debunked round after round as Spence easily boxed Mikey’s ears off to win the 12-round decision.

Danny Garcia Wants Another Big Name

Danny Garcia is a hard-hitting counterpuncher who rose to fame as a unified junior welterweight champion with impressive wins against the likes of Eric Morales, Zab Judah and Lucas Matthysse.

But after Garcia, 31, from Philadelphia, Penn., made the jump up to welterweight, he seemed to struggle against the larger opposition at welterweight. While he picked up the WBC welterweight title against Robert Guerrero in 2016, he lost it by split-decision to Keith Thurman in his first defense one year later.

Garcia is 2-2 over his last four fights. His wins came against lower-level opponents in which Garcia entered the bout a heavy favorite. Against the more notable welterweights, Thurman and current WBC champion Shawn Porter, Garcia went 0-2.
