UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs Shahbazyan Odds, Tips & Picks

After three weeks, featuring four events, the UFC’s journey to Fight Island is finally finished. But that doesn’t mean the promotion, or UFC betting, is slowing. The worldwide leader in MMA is still going strong with a slate of five events in August, set for the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. The first of those cards is this weekend.

Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card is a bit short on name value but comes through with flying colors for important, exciting fights. In the main event, undefeated prospect Edmen Shahbazyan attempts to make his case for being a contender against longtime middleweight stalwart Derek Brunson.

The co-main event features a women’s flyweight title eliminator between Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia.

Brunson vs Shahbazyan Betting Tips

Shahbazyan (11-0) is a hot-shot middleweight prospect out of Glendale, California, who has stormed the UFC with three stoppages in only four fights. He’s only 22, and the future looks very bright for Shahbazyan, who has made no bones about wanting to become the youngest champion in UFC history.

Those dreams will have to wait, though.

As talented as Shahbazyan is, he still has a lot of work to do. In 2018 he eked out a split decision against Darren Stewart, and Derek Brunson (20-7) is a huge step up in competition. I like Shahbazyan’s future, but for him to be such a big favorite over someone with Brunson’s pedigree is wrong. Take the value bet and back Brunson at +260 with BetAmerica.

Calderwood vs Maia Betting Tips

This is a fairly straightforward fight. Joanne Calderwood and Jennifer Maia are both going to look to kickbox, but Calderwood (14-4) is just a little bit better. She is taller than Maia (17-6-1), has a longer reach and, most important, works at a much higher rate than Maia while maintaining similar defense.

On top of that, Calderwood is a willing wrestler, happy to use takedowns to steal rounds and change pace on her opponents. Maia has never been stopped and Calderwood isn’t much of a finisher, so when you add it all up, this should be a simple Calderwood decision win. Bet it at +105 with DraftKings.

Luque vs Brown Betting Tips

This welterweight fight is going to be a barnburner. Vicente Luque (18-7-1) is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. He’s a whirling dervish of limbs and violence. And Randy Brown (12-3) is no slouch either. Brown is more methodical but he’s equally as talented and has recently started putting all the pieces of his game together.

Still, in the past five years Luque has only lost to Leon Edwards and Stephen Thompson, two of the best welterweights in the world, and he acquitted himself well in both fights. Luque’s brand of hyper aggressive violence is eventually going to overwhelm Brown and result in a finish. Take Luque by KO/TKO at +270 with PointsBet.
