Key Trials in the last 10 years

The Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle at Kempton has produced one winner (Flying Tiger) and no placed horse in the past 10 years. With the Irish domination of the race in recent years, and the fact horses who have won a graded hurdle don't have a great record this probably isn't surprising. Mambonumberfive won the latest edition of that race.

The Grade 1 Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown has thrown out one winner (Flaxen Flare) and two placed horses in the past 10 years. The higher-class juveniles that run in this race tend to head to the Triumph Hurdle instead, and this year will be no exception as Narsico Has is favourite for the Triumph. The runner up, Selma de Vary would be an interesting participant if she turned up.

Three of the last seven winners of the Fred Winter ran in the Rated Hurdle at Naas in February. Band Of Outlaws, Aramax, and Brazil won that race, while Jazzy Matty was third in it before his Cheltenham success. Keep an eye on anything that ran in that race this year which was won by Highland Crystal.

• Paul Nicholls is brilliant to follow here, having saddled three winners and eight placed horses from 26 runners in the past 13 years.
• Gordon Elliott has won three of the last eight editions and four in all. Elliott also trained the third and fourth in 2020.

How Did The Trends do Last Year?

Last year, history pointed towards Murcia (finished 8th), Holy See (PU), Naturally Nimble and Ephesus (both NR), so it wasn't the best year for the trends. 

However, Puturhandstogether wasn't too difficult to find. He had won a hurdle race which wasn't a graded contest in the same year, was ridden by Mark Walsh and was trained by Joseph O'Brien and had a rating over 125. He also dodged all of the traditional trials for the race which is why he didn't have universal appeal as far as trends go.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2026?

Applying the major trends to this race can help narrow the field significantly. We're looking for Irish-trained runners rated 125 or more, who aren't top weight, whose last run wasn't in a handicap and have won one or two hurdle races but not a graded race.

As horses have not yet been allocated their ratings, narrowing down the field on that basis isn't possible yet. We will update our selections when this happens.

The key trial for this race is the Rated Hurdle at Naas in February, which has produced four winners of the Fred Winter, including 2023 winner Jazzy Matty, who was only third in that Naas contest. The winner Highland Crystal plus placed horses Saratoga and Munsif are all prominent in the betting, so what rating they receive could play a big part in the shape of the race.

Selma de Vary is another interesting contender, but she maybe finished too close to Narciso Has and could be given too much to carry. She is also trained by Willie Mullins who has never won the race.
