World Cup Costs: A Look At The Numbers
England’s first World Cup match (against Croatia on June 17) is set for the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. That’s 4,750 miles (or 7,645 kilometers) from London.
Of the five World Cup markets surveyed for this story, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (which includes Arlington) is the most expensive to reach by plane. The average flight cost to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is £1,077.77 from Heathrow, though the DFW area also has the second-cheapest hotel rate on average, at £574.66.
All told, the DFW region’s total cost of £2,700.94 ranks as the second-most expensive of the five North American markets on our list.
At BetMGM Sportsbook, England is on 8/13 odds to beat Croatia, with the Croats at 7/2 to win and a 5/2 price for a draw.
Of the three cities that England will play in for Group L matches, the second one ranks as the cheapest. Flights to Boston’s Logan Airport – for the June 23 game against Ghana – cost £633.54, the lowest figure and the total cost is £2,546.47.
The final group match for coach Thomas Tuchel’s squad is June 27 against Panama in East Rutherford, New Jersey, several miles outside New York City. Flights to Newark Libertyville International average £668.57, but what will really set you back in The Big Apple and environs is lodging. We calculate average hotel costs at £1,303.61, by far the most expensive on our list, leading to a total of £2,715.85 for a trek to the region.
At the best football betting sites, England is among the favorites to win the 2026 World Cup. So, if you’re inclined to follow the squad and are willing to dedicate the time and money, do you take the sure thing and book these trips? Or do you save up and gamble that England goes on a deep run and you can come to North America later in the tournament?
Distances From Downtowns Are A Factor
Don’t forget ground transportation costs to all three suburban sites. Arlington is about 18 miles from downtown Dallas, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough is at least 30 miles from Boston and East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium is about 10 miles from Manhattan (though at least there, public transportation options are plentiful).
The bigger issue for fans of the English football team is the vast distances between the three cities where England plays its Group L matches for this first 48-team World Cup. In particular, AT&T Stadium is 1,551 miles (or 2,496 kilometers) from Boston/Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium. The trip from there to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium is a more manageable 207 miles by car or train.
All told, attending the three Group L matches would equate to 1,758 miles of travel, roughly the distance between the UK and Athens, Greece.
What Happens if England Advances Out of Group L?
At bet365 Sportsbook, England is at 2/7 odds to win Group L.
Should the Three Lions top the group, they’d head to Atlanta for a Round of 32 match, which would be held on July 1.
Fans can expect flight costs from LHR to Hartsfield International Airport to average £760.25, with an overall cost of £2,142.83, the cheapest of the five markets we surveyed. Plus the gleaming Mercedes-Benz Stadium is downtown, something not true for the previous three sites.
Should England finish second in Group L, they’d head to the Canadian metropolis of Toronto, playing the second place team from Group K on July 2. Flights from Heathrow to Toronto-Bishop International Airport average £531.43, the cheapest of the five markets surveyed. Overall costs to the largest city in Canada run £2,577.25, the third-most expensive of the quintet.
There are other possible permutations if England finishes third in its group and still advances.
For now, English football fans can go ahead and book that trip to the Dallas-Arlington region. That is where The Three Lions begin their quest to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966 in mid-June.
