The England Manager Era Index

Thomas Tuchel leads England into the 2026 World Cup with his squad as one of the football betting favourites to win the tournament in North America.
Bookies.com created a metric, the England Manager Era Index, to measure every England manager since 1990. Where will Tuchel land on this list in a few months, after his first major international tournament? As we await an answer, see how Tuchel’s nine most immediate predecessors fared with this interactive graphic:
The England Manager Era Index
Every permanent England men's manager since 1990, ranked by a composite score combining win percentage, tournament finishes and performance versus the pre-tournament betting markets.
Era Index = (Win% × 0.33) + (Tournament Score × 0.50) + (((Market Delta + 100) / 2) × 0.17)Thomas Tuchel England Record and 2026 World Cup Odds
Tuchel’s resume boasts stints at some of the biggest clubs in the world and includes several major honors, including the UEFA Champions League crown with Chelsea in 2021.
But none of that will matter entering the World Cup, where England aims for its first title since hosting the tournament and defeating West Germany in the final in 1966.
If Tuchel matches Gareth Southgate’s achievements and lasts as long in the job, fans across the nation will have reason to be pleased. Tuchel, 52, has a record of nine wins, one draw and two losses since taking over as England manager at the start of 2025.
That 75.0% win rate is the best of anyone in his post since 1990 (excluding Sam Allardyce’s one-game tenure, which we have not included in our calculations), including a perfect mark in eight World Cup qualifiers. Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra didn’t provide the most testing competition in qualifying in 2025, but 22 goals scored and zero conceded over eight matches solidified England’s status as a strong World Cup betting proposition at top UK betting sites.
Gareth Southgate England Legacy and Best Tournament Results
Southgate reached one World Cup semifinal and two finals at the Euros, the best achievements by an England manager in more than a generation.
So it’s no surprise that he tops the list in our metrics for the England Manager Era Index, which measures Three Lions bosses since 1990. Southgate earned 70.9 points in our calculations, with England outperforming expectations set by bookmakers for major competitions. He’s one of only two managers on our list with a positive market delta, meaning his teams outperformed their pre-tournament status at UK betting apps.
The other is Terry Venables, whose tenure from 1994-96 included a run to the semifinals at home during Euro 96. That was the only major tournament appearance for El Tel, but that was enough to boost him past a few managers on this list who had better overall winning percentages.
At the bottom is Steve McLaren, whose tenure ended in ignominious fashion with failure to qualify for Euro 2008. That performance sunk his chances in our table, though his England teams won more frequently (50%) than a few others higher up on our list. Caretaker managers are not included in our data.
