No prizes for originality here but Rainbow Dreamer has an outstanding chance in the Marathon and odds of 10/3 at time of writing look more than fair.

The highest-rated runner left in the race, Alan King’s smart all-weather performer has a nigh-on ideal profile for this 75k contest and he warmed up for his big spring target with a ready success in a fast-track qualifier.

That Kempton form isn’t to be sniffed out with the 114-rated Prince Of Arran back in third and Rainbow Dreamer doesn’t meet anything of that calibre on Good Friday – indeed his highest-rated rival is Red Verdon, rated 108.

Rainbow Dreamer twice finished behind Australis in 2020 but on both occasions he was giving lumps of weight to that rival in a handicap, whereas today he gets tackle that opponent of levels which turns the tables heavily in the selection’s favour.

Rainbow Dreamer tends to be ridden handily so he will be less convenience by a steadily-run race than some of his rivals, indeed he can go on and make the running if needs be so he looks the ideal type to win races around Lingfield.

It is a little surprising that he doesn’t have any course form to his name already but he’s a multiple winner on Kempton’s Polytrack so we know the surface won’t be an issue and he has stacks of form on turning tracks so Lingfield really shouldn’t pose any problems.

He’s the one to beat.

With John & Thady Gosden carrying all before them last weekend it is likely punters are going to latch onto Indie Angel as potential banker material in this contest.

However, she stays further than a mile so there must be doubts about her ability to produce her best over a sharp 7f, especially after a lay-off (yet to win after a break) so she looks worth taking on at a short price despite this looking a weak renewal.

If Fizzy Feet comes here instead of the sprint then she would be very tempting despite the question marks over the trip. She runs the Lingfield turns so well that it’s easy to envisage her poaching a lead off the home turn. Whether that is enough to see her home is anyone’s guess.

The obvious alternative is Shimmering Dawn who has some strong 7f form in the book.

It is easy enough to forgive Shimmering Dawn her heavy Wolverhampton defeat in March as there was a major pace bias thanks to a strong tail wind at Dunstall Park that day. She had previously looked on really good terms with herself and the booking of James Doyle, who is one from one on the mare, is very encouraging.

3-Year-Old All-Weather Championships Conditions Stakes

Diligent Harry, who was unfortunate not to make it 3-3 from last time, rates a huge danger given his obvious potential for further progress but as things stand, the form of Apollo One is a good bit stronger so he has to be the wager at the prices.

Apollo One qualified for this meeting after an enterprising ride took him to victory in a 7f Listed contest and that first run since October should have put him spot in for this assignment.

The drop back to 6f won’t be an issue because he’s a horse that can take a keen hold, so the stronger pace of this bigger field should really help him to settle. If he does and he can avoid traffic problems, he has the finishing kick to upset some higher-profile rivals.

It’s easy to see why the likes of Mums Tipple and Khuzaam are prominent in the betting, especially the former who looked back to something near his best when running away with the Lady Wulfruna Stakes at Wolverhampton.

However, the strong tailwind that day was aiding those that raced close to the pace so Mums Tipple could be a touch flattered by that, while Khuzaam might struggle to get his own way up front.

A solid alternative is Intuitive who was clearly not suited by the way his latest start panned out. He is a strong traveller that is well served by coming off a strong pace, as he showed when storming clear in a good quality event over this C&D in January and that level of performance puts him firmly in the reckoning here.

There could easily be more to come from him at this venue and he should get a decent pace to aim at so at around 7/1, he looks a spot of value.

All-Weather Championships Apprentice Handicap

This looks trappy but the booking of apprentice of the moment Benoit De La Sayette for Ayr Harbour looks significant and this 4-year-old has been targeted at this race since his emphatic Southwell success on New Year’s Day.

That three-length romp means he must now race off a career-high mark of 97 but his jockey already looks ridiculous value for his 7lb claim and trainer Michael Appleby has made no secret of the fact that he expects a huge run from Ayr Harbour on Good Friday.

Ayr Harbour has already taken the scalps of some serious all-weather performers this winter and he won’t have any issues with the sharp turns of Lingfield having won on his last visit to the Surrey venue.

Luck in-running will be a factor in what looks sure to be a double-figure field but connections wasted no time in snapping up the services of one of the brightest young talents in the game and Ayr Harbour is going to relish coming off the likely strong pace.
