Group A at the 2026 World Cup features four sides that aren’t necessarily fancied at World Cup betting sites, but who have the potential to go deep into the knockout stages.
Co-hosts Mexico will have the benefit of home support, something they had in 1986 when reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup. They’re a well-organised side that could struggle for goals. Raul Jimenez is their main threat but at 35, he’s certainly not getting any younger.
Czechia took the long road to the World Cup, going through the playoffs and seeing off Ireland and Denmark to make it here. They’ve been rewarded with a decent draw but are far from guaranteed to be able to capitalise on it, as evidenced by their World Cup qualifying defeat at the hands of the Faroe Islands.

Since the turn of the millennium, no team in this group has progressed as far in a World Cup as South Korea did in 2002. Again showing the impact home support can have, they shocked the world by making it to the semi-finals. They’ve reached the knockout rounds twice in four attempts since so clearly have the right stuff for tournament football.
Appearing in the first World Cup since hosting in 2010, South Africa will be hopeful of getting past the group stage for the first time in their history. Not many will know a lot about Bafana Bafana, with the majority of their squad playing for South African clubs, and they may end up paying for their lack of quality. But perhaps we'll be able to enjoy the vuvuzelas when they aren't quite so loud 16 years on!
Odds to Win Group A
Mexico were odds-on to win Group A at UK betting apps and duly achieved that with two wins from their first two games. Despite not being world-beaters, the co-hosts landed in a very winnable group and now the other three teams have to scrap for second and third.
Odds to Qualify From Group A
As many as three teams could progress from this group, with South Korea needing only a point to guarantee second behind Mexico. A win for Czechia would likely see them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, whilst South Africa also need to win to have any chance of reaching the knockouts.
Group A Fixtures
Group A, and indeed the 2026 World Cup overall, kicked off on Thursday, 11th June, with Mexico taking on South Africa. Here are the final two Group A fixtures:
- 25 June, 2am - Czechia vs Mexico - Mexico City Stadium
- 25 June, 2am - South Africa vs South Korea - Monterrey Stadium
Group A Betting Tips
Mexico couldn’t have been handed an easier opener in this group and got their campaign off to a flyer. That momentum, coupled with playing at home, was enough to ensure they won Group A after just two games and may now give their starters a rest.
That opens the door for Czechia, who haven't exactly set the world alight so far but are better than they have played and look a solid price to beat Mexico and qualify for the knockouts.
Back Czechia to qualify at 5/2 with William Hill for Group A.
