Next Permanent Liverpool Manager

Jurgen Klopp is now among the favourites in the next Premier League manager to be sacked market, with Liverpool having recently lost consecutive matches against Nottingham Forest and Leeds United. While the Reds are going through to the Champions League last-16 stage, they now have an uphill struggle to qualify for the competition next season unless they win it.

Klopp nearly steered the Merseyside outfit to a historic quadruple last term, although the German is now experiencing his most sticky patch since taking charge at Anfield seven years ago. Liverpool are still without an away win in the Premier League this term, and there is now speculation that he might either resign or leave the club by mutual consent, with the best football betting sites pricing up his potential replacements.

We look at the candidates who can potentially replace Klopp should a change be made. Pep Lijnders is already on the LFC payroll and could breathe new life as head coach, with Thomas Tuchel also a viable candidate, although Steven Gerrard's odds have drifted after an ill-fated spell at Aston Villa.

Is Gerrard Good Enough to Replace Klopp?

Until recently, Gerrard was trading as the favourite at betting sites to replace Jurgen Klopp. The general feeling was that he'd done an excellent job at Rangers and won a Scottish Premiership title before coming to Aston Villa to demonstrate that he had the credentials to take charge of his boyhood club.

While Rangers went unbeaten in the league during Gerrard's title-winning campaign, his time at Aston Villa was not a successful one. The team appeared bereft of ideas and direction when the 42-year-old was given his marching orders after previously being heraled as an improvement on Dean Smith.

Indeed, the main doubt surrounding Gerrard was his inexperience. He had never occupied a Premier League dugout as a coach until taking the Villa job. In order to get the Liverpool manager's job, one would imagine he would have to join part of the backroom staff first before being promoted from within.

Revival of Boot Room Tradition Could Benefit Pep Lijnders

Beginning in the 1960s, Liverpool’s coaching staff used to hold informal meetings in the Anfield Boot Room to discuss tactics and strategy. Bill Shankly was the manager back then, and Bob Paisley, Reuben Bennett, Tom Saunders, Joe Fagan and Ronnie Moran were all founding members of the group. Paisley and Fagan went on to manage the first team, as did Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness – two key players who knew the club inside out – and Roy Evans.

A return to that approach could benefit Pep Lijnders, Liverpool’s current assistant manager. Klopp has done a superb job at Anfield, and FSG may not want to tear up everything he has put in place since 2015. Lijnders is now trading as the favourite on betting apps and would be a continuity candidate who could lead Liverpool along the same path that Klopp has set them on. The big question, however, is whether he is cut out for life as a No. 1. His only managerial job ended with his dismissal after a few months at NEC Nijmegen.

With no other obvious candidates currently available and Klopp's position at the club uncertain, perhaps we would see Lijnders take the job on a caretaker basis with a view to making the position permanent. The 39-year-old is well regarded at Liverpool and could be open to securing the top job.

Would Tuchel Be a Good Fit for Liverpool FC?

Thomas Tuchel certainly has the experience of managing high-profile football clubs. The German was in charge of Borussia Dortmund between 2015-17 before a stint with Paris Saint-Germain between 2018-20. During this time, he steered them to a Champions League final before a defeat to Bayern Munich.

Tuchel went one better with Chelsea when engineering a Champions League success in 2021, having replaced Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge midway through the season. He was generally regarded as a success at the club and it was something of a surprise when owner Todd Boehly decided to dispense with his services just a few games into the 2022-23 season.

Tuchel is therefore a free agent who has previously won two Ligue 1 titles with PSG. He has a similar football philosophy to Klopp and could be open to the idea of returning to England and taking charge of such a prestigious outfit. There would be an opportunity to build a new squad and it's interesting to see him among the current favourites.

Could Liverpool Succeed in Landing Nagelsmann?

If Klopp does depart sooner than expected, FSG might be tempted by a coach with more pedigree behind him. In many ways, Julian Nagelsmann offers the best of both worlds. He has been a manager since 2016 and taken charge of three different clubs in Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. Yet at 35 years of age, he is still young and hungry as he continues to burnish his reputation as one of the brightest minds in the European game.

Nagelsmann’s is by no means identical to Klopp’s, but his appointment would offer a degree of stylistic continuity. Leipzig became an excellent pressing team while he was in charge there, full of energy and dynamism when they attacked and defended. Nagelsmann is now proving himself as a brilliant tactician at Bayern Munich, and he has the track record to quell concerns that his age might be an obstacle to winning the respect of the players in the Anfield dressing room.

Nagelsmann might be a difficult manager to land considering that he's only recently started out on his journey with the German powerhouse. It's unlikely that he might consider a move to England at this point in time, although Liverpool might benefit from someone who is now helping Sadio Mane develop into an even stronger player.

Could Diego Simeone be tempted by a new challenge?

One of the few managers of an elite club who has been in the position longer than Klopp at Liverpool, Diego Simeone is among an equally small number of visiting coaches to have won at Anfield in the last couple of years. The Argentine, who has moulded Atletico Madrid in his image since being handed the reins in 2011, is widely considered one of the best managers in world football.

There are two obstacles that would need to be negotiated, though. First, Simeone is the best-paid manager in the world, pocketing close to £40m in the Spanish capital. Klopp earns around £21.3m, so Liverpool would probably have to raise funds from elsewhere to meet Simeone’s wage demands.

Second, the Argentine favours a reactive style of play that is very different to the model Klopp has installed at Anfield. Despite his undeniable ability, Simeone is not a natural fit.
