Chelsea have fielded the youngest squad in the 2026-27 Premier League, with an average first-team age of just 24.7. At the opposite end, Leeds United are leaning on the division's most experienced group, averaging 27.4 years old.

Between those two extremes sit the other 18 clubs, and the full breakdown below throws up some genuine surprises -- including a few of the league's oldest squads currently sitting inside the top four.

We calculated every club's number by taking the exact age of each registered first-team player, as of today, from their official 2026-27 squad list, then averaging across the full squad.

The Premier League's Youngest Squads in 2026-27

Chelsea (24.7) top the list comfortably, and the numbers back up the eye test. The Blues' squad includes teenagers Estêvão and Geovany Quenda, plus a run of 20-somethings such as Levi Colwill, Moisés Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers anchoring the spine of the team. It's the clearest continuation yet of Chelsea's youth-first recruitment strategy of the past few seasons.

Brentford (25.1) and Brighton & Hove Albion (25.2) round out the top three, which tracks with both clubs' reputations as two of the shrewdest recruiters in English football -- identifying talent early, developing it, and often selling high. Brighton's squad alone includes seven players aged 21 or younger.

Manchester City (25.4) is the biggest name to crack the top five, which may surprise fans who still picture the Etihad dressing room stacked with the peak-prime internationals of City's title-winning years. That squad has quietly gotten younger, with academy graduates and low-20s signings like Nico O'Reilly, Rico Lewis, Josko Gvardiol and Vitor Reis now core rotation pieces. AFC Bournemouth (25.6) and Liverpool (25.8) complete the six youngest sides in the division.

The Premier League's Oldest Squads in 2026-27

Leeds United (27.4) have the oldest average age in the league, roughly two and a half years older than Chelsea's squad on the whole. Ipswich Town (27.2) and a tie between Coventry City and Nottingham Forest (27.1 each) follow closely behind. Notably, Ipswich, Coventry and Hull City are all playing their first season back in the Premier League after promotion, while Leeds are in their second — and three of those four newly promoted clubs (Leeds, Ipswich, Coventry) have leaned on proven, experienced squads rather than betting heavily on unproven youth.

That pattern isn't universal, though. Hull City and Sunderland are also newly promoted (Hull in their first season back, Sunderland in their second) but both sit on the younger side of the table — tied for 8th and 7th respectively — proving there's more than one way to build a squad capable of staying up.

Fulham (26.7) is the oldest squad among clubs who avoided promotion or relegation battles last season, just ahead of a tie between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur (26.6 each).

Does Squad Age Actually Predict Anything? The Table Says No

Line the age rankings up against the current Premier League table and the pattern falls apart almost immediately -- which is exactly what makes this data fun to dig into.

Arsenal currently top the table while carrying a middle-of-the-pack average age of 26.5 (tied for 12th). Leeds United -- the single oldest squad in the entire league -- sit an eye-catching 3rd, and Hull City, one of the younger sides in the division, are right there with them in 4th. Meanwhile, Chelsea's league-youngest squad currently occupies a solidly mid-table spot, and Coventry City sit bottom of the table despite fielding one of the more experienced groups in the Premier League.

In short: age is a fun lens for storylines, squad-building philosophy and injury-risk conversations, but on this season's evidence it tells you almost nothing about where a club will finish.
