Football betting sites still think Erling Haaland is a banker to be top scorer in the Premier League once again this season. The 23-year-old scored 36 goals in the Premier League last season, and he's scoring at a similar rate this season after pilfering 16 goals in 19 matches.

The Manchester City forward still looks like a sure thing to finish Premier League top scorer unless his injury come back to haunt him. However, some bookmakers are offering each-way betting, and that brings a number of players into sharp focus. Mohamed Salah, Heung-Min Son and Dominic Solanke could be capable of running into a place, with Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins also looking to achieve a sizeable total this term.

Haaland looks like he's going to top the Premier League scoring charts, and it looks like it will be Salah, Son Watkins or Solanke will finish runner-up behind him.

Can Anyone Stop Haaland Topping the Scoring Charts?

Betting apps all still offering odds-against prices that Erling Haaland finishes top scorer in the Premier League this season.

However, the odds are not as slim as they were early on in the season. Bookies quickly had to slash those prices as the Norwegian scored goals in a hurry during the early part of the campaign. Sixteen goals in the first 19 league games puts him on course for another record-breaking season.

However, due to a long-term foot injury, he missed nearly two months of action. Whether his current price of around 4/11 represents value or not depends on how quickly he can return to scoring regularly now that he is back on the pitch. With the return of Kevin De Bruyne to the City side, he is certain to receive the service he needs to top the charts.

As things stand, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah is regarded as the biggest threat to Haaland's chances of retaining he Golden Boot. The Egyptian has been nothing but prolific for the Reds since arriving from Roma and has 15 goals, even if it has taken him 22 games.

Salah's main obstacle to taking the award at present isn't form, it's the injury he sustained at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Another challenger for the award, Heung-Min Son has also been absent for Tottenham in the new year. The South Korean was at the AFC Asian Cup, to start the year and has only just returned to Tottenham. He has previously won this award, with Tottenham looking like a free-scoring team under Ange Postecoglou he could be worth an each way punt.

Haaland Back on the Goal Trail For New Season

Nineteen games played, 16 goals scored. Erling Haaland continues to make finding the net look easy, and the bookmakers have effectively crowned him top scorer for the second season running at this early juncture despite his injury.

Two factors that will affect Erling Haaland's end-of-season tally will be; how much Pep Guardiola rotates his squad as the season progresses, and how much longer he spends on the treatment table. However, Haaland played the lion's share of the EPL matches last term when fit and should be able to finish comfortably clear of the pack, should he play in the majority of City's games between now and the end of the season.

The main threat to Haaland in his pursuit of another Golden Boot is unfortunately injury. The other leading strikers are competing for second right now.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is regarded as the sternest challenger to Haaland and is a best price of 5/1 to top the charts.

Who Are the Best Each-Way Bets for Top Scorer?

Some football betting sites are offering 1/3 odds for the first two places when it comes to each-way betting now we are into the season. Therefore, customers can eschew the idea of backing Haaland and instead find a player to go well at bigger odds. It does look like whoever you pick will need to score more than one of an inform Salah and the prolific Haaland. Not the easiest of paths to success.

You can make a guaranteed profit if you can identify a player to finish in the top two places. The two closest challengers to the big three are Solanke and Watkins. Solanke is in fine form, having scored 14 goals this season. At 12/1 he could put himself in a strong position to pick up an each-way place when the run in starts.

The other main each-way challenger is Ollie Watkins. The Villa striker has scored goals at a steady rate all season but could struggle to get into the top two if Villa's form doesn't improve. With two defeats and a draw in their last five games, Watkins needs the team to find the winning touch again for his odds of 18/1 to pay off.

Previous Premier League Top Scorers

Prior to Haaland's runaway success last season, Son and Salah were tied on 23 goals at the end of the 2021-22 season. While the South Korean was declared the winner (by scoring the most non-penalties), most new betting sites deemed it a dead heat, meaning bets on both players were settled as a winner, with the stake halved.

Harry Kane obliged at odds of 6/1 the season before, although Bruno Fernandes ran into third at 33/1, and Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford was able to land a joint-fourth position at 150/1. This serves to highlight that there can be excellent value betting on an outsider on an each-way basis.

The 2019-20 Premier League season saw a 20/1 winner in the form of Jamie Vardy, with the Leicester City striker able to score 23 goals, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Danny Ings were able to notch 22 goals. The latter was priced at 250/1, and it’s generally the case that a player of this price runs into the places.

How Many Goals Are Needed to be Premier League Top Scorer?

In the previous three seasons before the 2022/23 campaign, the winner(s) had scored 23 goals. Haaland's tally of 36 was an outlier, and it's usually been a far more modest number to win the top scorer prize. Two seasons ago, Salah and Son were five goals clear of Cristiano Ronaldo, while Salah and Kane were the only players to pass 20 goals the season before.

Vardy, Aubameyang, Ings and Raheem Sterling were all able to score 20 goals or more in the 2019-20 season, with Salah and then-Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane dead-heating 12 months previously along with Aubameyang when the trio all managed to score 22 goals.
