Hearts sit top of the Scottish Premiership table with five games remaining in one of the most exciting title races in recent years. It means that the Edinburgh side are currently in charge of their own destiny, not that the odds at top football betting sites would have you believe that!
TL;DR - Scottish Premiership Title Race
- Hearts lead the Scottish Premiership, but Celtic and Rangers are close behind, creating a thrilling title race.
- Rangers have better recent form, winning four consecutive matches, while Hearts remain unbeaten at home this season.
- Key upcoming matches include Hearts vs. Rangers and Celtic vs. Rangers, which could decide the championship.
- Top betting sites favour Rangers for the title, but Hearts' fans are hopeful for their first championship since 1960.
That’s because the Old Firm pair of Celtic and Rangers are well placed to take advantage of any slip-ups. Rangers are just a point behind the leaders with a better goal difference. Celtic sit a further two points behind and have the knowhow when it comes to landing titles.
Scottish Premiership League Table
| Teams | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | GD | Points |
| Hearts | 33 | 21 | 7 | 5 | 30 | 70 |
| Rangers | 33 | 19 | 12 | 2 | 35 | 69 |
| Celtic | 33 | 21 | 4 | 8 | 24 | 67 |
Hearts supporters are now daring to dream that they’ll be Scottish champions for the first time since 1960. Not since Aberdeen’s success in the 1984-85 season have we seen a club from outside the Old Firm claim a title. However, Derek McInnes’ side have lasted the pace and return from their training camp in Spain to battle it out for this major domestic honour this weekend.
The league leaders continue to boast an unbeaten record at Tynecastle this season, although there have been some recent bumps in the road. That includes a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock and, more recently, a 2-2 draw at Livingston. They also lost at Ibrox in the middle of February despite twice taking the lead.
Rangers and Celtic have both had their own issues this season, which has enabled a third team to jostle for silverware. Indeed, Rangers are on their second manager of the season in Danny Rohl, while Celtic’s Martin O’Neill is in caretaker charge for the second time this campaign.

The odds and top UK betting sites suggest the Gers are the team most likely to be crowned champions.
Scottish Premiership Odds
It’s Rohl’s side who boast the best form. Since a 2-2 draw in the Old Firm derby, they have four straight victories in the Scottish Premiership.
Some of these wins have been emphatic, including a recent 6-3 success at Falkirk where Rangers recovered from going 2-0 down to come through with a big win. Their attacking enterprising football could well be rewarded with a first Premiership title since the 2020-21 season when Steven Gerrard broke the Celtic stranglehold with an unbeaten season.
However, O’Neill has won three titles with Celtic before and perhaps his team can use that experience to get over the line. The Hoops have won the past four titles and they’re back in the winning groove. A 2-0 reverse at Dundee United was a spanner in the works, but they’ve since recovered to land three straight victories including a 6-2 win over St Mirren in the cup.

Scottish Premiership Fixtures
Hearts, Rangers and Celtic All Set to Clash Over Coming Weeks
Although Hearts’ destiny is in their own hands, two of their remaining five matches are against the Old Firm teams. There’s also the small matter of an Edinburgh derby at Easter Road next up, with Hibernian determined to stop their city rivals from becoming champions for the first time in 66 years.
McInnes’ men then host Rangers in their next Scottish Premiership clash before a final-game showdown at Celtic Park. The stakes could be extremely high for both teams going into that clash, with the same applying to the final Old Firm derby of the campaign. That takes place on Sunday 10 May, where Celtic host their arch-rivals. The Bhoys will draw comfort from the fact that they’re at home to both title rivals, but the odds at top betting apps still suggest Rangers are the likelier league winners.
Key Fixtures
- Sunday 26 April: Hibernian vs Hearts
- Monday 4 May: Hearts vs Rangers
- Sunday 10 May: Celtic vs Rangers
- Saturday 16 May: Celtic vs Hearts
