The brilliant July Cup winner was a top-priced 11/2 third favourite for the Group 1 showpiece but connections have decided to instead target the outstanding sprinter at Australia’s valuable Everest Stakes, which is worth over $6million to the winner.

Ten Sovereigns has been one of the leading hopes for Haydock’s big sprint ever since running away with the July Cup at Newmarket, although he wasn’t able to get anywhere near that level of form dropped back to five furlongs for the Coolmore Nunthorpe at York on his only subsequent start.

The step back up to six furlongs was expected to help Ten Sovereigns but conditions have gone against the son of No Nay Never and the Ballydoyle team have decided that his final start before being retired to stud will now be Down Under.

Ground conditions at Haydock are currently described as soft, good to soft in places, with more rain forecast before the weekend, especially on Friday, so conditions look sure to be testing.

Ante-post favourite Advertise (9/4) handled good to soft ground well when winning the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot but he is untested on anything slower, and that could make him vulnerable.

He might struggle to confirm that form with Hello Youmzain who is proven on slower ground and who took the notable scalp of Calyx at Haydock earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, has confirmed ante-post favourite Logician will now be targeted at the St. Leger.

The unbeaten John Gosden-trained grey burst to prominence in the betting for the Doncaster Classic with a brilliant display in the Great Voltigeur at York.

Grimthorpe said: “There were a couple of things to think about after York which is why we didn't commit to the St Leger straight away, not least how the horse came out of York.

“Logician seems in good shape and the Leger looks the right race for him. He shapes as if he'll stay the trip so we're hopeful. He worked nicely this morning and it's all systems go for Doncaster.”

Logician (11/8) has yet to race beyond a mile-and-a-half but now looks certain to head into the final Classic of the season as a red-hot favourite to provide his trainer with a fifth victory in the race following Shantou (1996), Lucarno (2007), Arctic Cosmos (2010) and Masked Marvel (2011).
