The West Coast swing on the PGA Tour comes to an end this week as The Genesis Invitational takes place at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, California. Formerly known as the Northern Trust Open the event often attracts a top-class field and this year is no different as the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy are all set to take part.

Cantlay to Continue Hot Streak

Patrick Cantlay has been in tremendous form this year with form figures reading T13, 2nd and T3, he will enjoy returning to Riviera Country Club where he has finished inside the top 17 on each of his last three visits to the venue. The three-time PGA Tour winner is no stranger to success in his home state of California after fending off Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas to win the Zozo Championship at the end of 2020.

The 28-year-old ranks 7th for birdie average and 12th for par 5 scoring so with three par fives in play at Riviera that’s sure to be in his favour. The Poa Annua greens are sure to suit Patrick who has an assured short game and everything seems to be trending in the right direction for the World No.8 at the Genesis Invitational this week.

Success Not Far Away for Scheffler

It's only a matter of time before PGA Tour maiden Scottie Scheffler picks up his first victory as he continues to contend in big events on only his second year on tour. The Texan has missed two cuts this year but his other two performances were impressive with a 13th place finish at the Sentry Tour of Champions and most recently finishing 7th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Scheffler ranks 1st for total driving (a combination of distance/accuracy) which is ideal around Riviera considering how demanding off the tee it is and he did finish T30 in the event last year so is no stranger to the course.

Ortiz Relishing Riviera Test

Since picking up his first tour victory at the Houston Open last year Carlos Ortiz has taken his game to another level. The Mexican is now a model of consistency and has made the cut in all of his previous nine tournaments.

He arrives on the back of a Top 5 finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open where he lead the field in putts per round and birdie conversion. Oritz is also no novice to Riviera with a T20 on his first visit to the course in 2015 he backed that up with two more Top 30 finishes and a Top 10 in 2019.

Final Thoughts

The event has been held at the same venue since 1926 and the Tom Fazio re-designed track measures 7,322 yards which features long tree-lined Kikuyu fairways to test players game off the tee which will suit the above selections.

Several holes are dog-legged so it helps to be able to work the ball both ways and it goes without saying that course experience around here is a huge advantage. The strategic bunkering and undulating poa greens make this venue a complete challenge with the winning score usually around -10 as we look set for a fantastic four days of golf.
