Tip 1 - 1:30 York - Papa Cocktail
In what should be a wide open race to kick things off at York on Saturday, Papa Cocktail gets the nod after some impressive progression this year. He won over this distance in January before moving up a grade, going 362 across three races, and then up again to Class 3 earlier this month when he finished second by a neck. He’s back down in grade today so should be right in the mix once again.

Tip 2 - 2:40 York - Air Force One
Air Force One started the season off with a bang when winning at Beverley, with the second home then going in next time out. Flopped over course and distance last time after missing the break and never really getting into the contest. Connections clearly thought he was right for the race as he goes back in just nine days later. Tip 3 - 3:40 Curragh - Distant Storm
Despite having plenty of ground to make up on Gstaad from the English 2000 Guineas running, Distant Storm is worth a second chance. He may have found the rattling fast ground unsuitable at Newmarket, considering his career-best effort came on good ground in the Tattersall’s Stakes last season. Gstaad, on the other hand, has won twice with the word ‘firm’ in the going description. First time cheekpieces and a return to more favourable ground should see Distant Storm live up to the hype that surrounded him just a few weeks ago.

Tip 4 - 4:05 Haydock - Yashin
Yashin has shown precious little since winning the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in April of last year. That was the fourth win of his career, with one of the others also coming in a Group 3. With his handicap rating now below 100 for the first time in over two years, catching him now with a new combination of headgear could be the right time. What is the Staking Plan and How Does a 1pt Win System Work?
We advise each bet as a win single or sometimes as an each way single. You can of course choose to combine the selections in a multiple bet, a Lucky 15 or a Yankee etc and that is a very popular way to follow the horses selected in this column daily.
A 1pt win per horse is advised in general and that means whatever your normal stake is for a bet is used as a point. For many this is £1 and for some this is £10 or more but it is totally relative to the individual and shouldn’t be more than you can afford to lose at any time.
For each way selections we advise a 0.5pt each way stake. So as with the win selections this would be a £1 total bet (50 pence each way) or a £10 total bet (£5 each way).
